Menggombal bukanlah dosa. Apalagi jika dirimua masih berusia remaja. Rasanya itu memang kekuatan para remaja. Dan Cody Simpson memanfaatkan kekuatannya untuk merilis single demi single yang berisi kata-kata manis untuk menarik perhatian pujaan hatinya. Yang terbaru adalah 'Pretty Brown Eyes', single terbaru dari album studio keduanya yang direncanakan untuk rilis tahun ini. Album baru lagi? Ya! Kini, setiap semester tidak berlalu tanpa album Cody. Baik itu EP maupun album studio.
Awalnya, saya cukup yakin Cody bukanlah vokalis cowok yang memiliki kecenderungan menjiplak citra musik seniornya secara spesifik, memolesnya dengan gaya yang lebih youth supaya terdengar relevan. Dan semakin kesini, ia semakin nyaman dengan keberadaannya di tengah-tengah: tidak seperti ini, tidak seperti itu. Jelas memudahkan baginya untuk lepas dari tuduhan pengekor, namun mempersulit penemuan corak musik yang khas. Ada sedikit Breezy, ada sedikit Drake dalam 'Pretty Brown Eyes' ini. Ia mereferensikan JT dalam liriknya sebagai pemikat, yang tak terlalu terjiplak dalam sound.
Banyak pencapaian yang terjadi disini bagi Cody sebagai seorang vokalis. Pertama, ia mulai menguasai teknik memuluskan falsetto ke suara asli sehingga menjadikan chorus di lagu ini terdengar seksi. "Hey there pretty brown eyes, watcha doin' later tonight?, mind if I spend time with you?" Come on! You know the answer already! Kedua, ia mencoba diri untuk nge-rap. Ya meskipun kecil-kecilan, tapi paling tidak ini mulai menggambarkan versalitas.
And as we're impressed by his vocal, kita diajak untuk lebih mesmerized dengan sosoknya sebagai performer. Lihat saja video musik untuk single ini, bukan bagian dimana Cody semakin PD untuk memamerkan tubuhnya yang semakin jadi, tapi bagian ia melakukan koreografi. Boyband-esque, but boyband do sale! Sehingga terdapatlah kesimpulan di setiap kali pengalaman 'Pretty Brown Eyes' tercipta: candy to the ear, candy to the eye.
