Entah karena faktor musik yang terasa riang, rasanya vokal Ariana Grande tidak kesulitan untuk menyelip masuk dalam single Popular Song milik Mika ini. Apalagi di bagian awal, dia yang paling awal memberi sentuhan vokal, bisa jadi kalau orang tidak jeli, lagu ini akan disangka Ariana feat. Mika.
Saya sendiri merasa “lain” dengan Popular Song yang digeber selama 3. 21 menit. Ada keriaan yang terasa berlebihan untuk seorang Mika. Walaupun banyak orang yang menarik batas kemiripannya dengan Grace Kelly, saya justru tidak menemukan kesamaan tersebut. Satu-satunya bagian yang menandakan bahwa ini lagu kepunyaan Mika hanyalah setelah bagian refrain ketika kita mendengar vokal falsetto khasnya.
Berbungkuskan sarkasme terselubung, rasanya Popular Song cocok bagi mereka yang membutuhkan kekuatan untuk menghadapi bully atau the hardest momen. Dengan beat yang crunchy, rasanya tidak akan sulit menemukannya di barisan playlist para remaja. Dan dengan faktor Ariana Grande, rasanya Mika akan mudah masuk dalam pasar tersebut.
Track ini sebenarnya dibuat dalam 2 versi. Kenapa hal ini menjadi menarik? Nama Priscilia Reena adalah yang pertama kali dipercayakan untuk membawakan bagian duet versi aslinya. Didasarkan dari serial musical terkenal di Broadway, Wicked, liriknya kemudian hadir dengan beberapa serapah dan perkataan yang sinis. Ditambah lagi dengan beat yang cenderung suram, malah menggambarkan musikalitas Mika yang sebenarnya. Priscilia Reena juga hadir dalam barisan penulis lirik bersama Mathieu Jomphe, Stephen Schwartz.
Dirilis pada tanggal 21 Desember, usia track ini sebenarnya sudah sangat lama. Tapi syukurlah video musik yang dibuat ala Tim Burton dirilis pada tanggal 29 April. Membuat hype dari album The Origin Of Love bisa jadi sedikit lebih panjang.
Rasanya Mika harus mencoba jalur lain untuk lebih beruntung tahun ini. The Origin of Love tidak bisa berkata banyak, mudah-mudahan kehadiran Ariana bukan hanya sebagai pemanis saja, tapi bisa membantu track ini untuk lebih popular. Cheers!
