Pasca kesuksesannya membantu Avicii dalam Wake Me Up, nama Aloe Blacc memang menjadi cukup menjulang. Tidak heran jika album ketiganya, Lift Your Spirit, mendapat sambutan yang cukup meriah. Tidak hanya itu, single The Man yang terdapat di dalamnya juga mencuri perhatian dengan bertengger di posisi 8 di Billboard Top 100 dan nomor 1 di Skotlandia dan Inggris.

Lantas, apa istimewanya single ini? The Man mengambil sampel lagu Your Man milik Elton John, terutama di bagian lirik "And you can tell everybody," akan tetapi kemudian lagu mengambil jalur yang berbeda. Memadukan antara soul, RnB, gospel dan juga pop, The Man merupakan ajang bagi Aloe Blacc untuk memamerkan vokalnya yang khas.

Kekuatan The Man lainnya terletak pada dinamika melodinya. Tidak terlalu berlebihan dalam naik turunnya namun memberi penekanan yang cukup kuat pada beat yang ritmis, sehingga lagu terdengar begitu bertenaga, meski sebenarnya pace yang diusungnya bergerak dalam tempo medium saja.

Vokal dan cara bernyanyu Aloe Blacc terkadang agak mengingatkan seseorang, meski mungkin sulit meraba siapa dia. Untunglah hal tersebut tidak menjadi halangan untuk dapat menyukai lagu ini. Tidak hanya menyebarkan romansa yang kental, The Man merupakan lagu pop-soul-rnb yang segar dan menghanyutkan.
