MTV Video Music Award tahun ini digelar di The Forum, Inglewood, California. Memasuk tahun yang ke-31 dengan co-host Jay Pharoah yang memparodikan artis Jay Z dan Kanye West. Beyonce dan Iggy Azalea mendapat nominasi terbanyak yaitu 8. Untungnya Beyonce mendapat Michael Jackson Vanguard Award dan juga Best Cinematography & Best Video with a Social Message untuk "Partition", sedangkan Iggy Azalea mendapat Best Pop Video bersama Ariana Grande di "Problem". Tahun ini, boleh dikatakan tidak seheboh tahun lalu dengan penampilan Miley Cyrus dan Robin Thicke. Aksi Nicki Minaj yang membawakan "Anaconda" cukup membuat Rita Ora kaget dan beberapa penonton lainnya cukup heboh, Videonya sendiri memecahkan rekor VEVO sebagai Video ditonton terbanyak dalam waktu 24 jam dengan total 19,6 juta views (mengalahkan Wrecking Ball dgn total 19,3 juta views).
Sebelum acara dimulai, Pre-Show dibuka dengan penampilan dari Fifth Harmony "Bo$$" dan juga Charli XCX "Boom Clap". Kemudian, Ariana Grande membuka dengan "Break Free", dilanjutkan Nicki Minaj "Anaconda" dan Jessie J dengan "Bang Bang". Penampilan selanjutnya datang dari Taylor Swift "Shake It Off", Sam Smith "Stay With Me", Usher & Nicki Minaj "She Came to Give It to You", 5 Seconds of Summer "Amnesia", Iggy Azalea & Rita Ora "Black Widow", Maroon 5 "Maps" (bukan di stage MTV VMA), dan Beyoncé dengan medley album "Beyoncé" sebagai penutup.
