Saya selalu menganggap Nick Jonas adalah Jonas yang paling berbakat. Termuda dalam grup, tapi terbesar pengaruhnya dalam membangun imej dan musikalitas kumpulannya. Langkah dari lingkar luar Jonas Brothers pun ia tapaki secara serius dan matang, tidak seperti sang kakak, Joe yang tampaknya larut dalam tipikal pop yang menjurus pada komersialitas. But that was then, karena sekarang justru Nick yang latah. Setidaknya untuk 'Chains', single andalan yang ia rilis untuk self-titled albumnya nanti, sepenuhnya ia percaya pada Jason Evigan dan tim untuk menggodoknya.
Hasilnya? Jauh dari poprock atau musik alternatif yang bisa dibilang wheelhouse, forte, dan elemen dari sang artis. Sekilas cukup mengecewakan. Seperti tak ada bagian dari Nick yang tersisa di single ini, hilang tak berbekas. Dan itu yang kita dapat kalau memandang single ini secara subyektif. Tapi kalau secara obyektif, tatanan musik yang cukup rapi masuk dalam ranah easy listening. Mendekat pada corak musik terbaru dari Justin Bieber, sedikit haunting laksana Lana del Rey, tapi masih ada edge dalam beat di pre-chorus. Harga kekiniannya tinggi, wujud relevansi terhadap era ini.
Kini, tapi bukan mainstream. Ini yang sebenarnya kontras mengenai selera masa kini. Generasi yang mengaku anti mainstream mempopulerkan apa-apa yang mereka anggap tidak mengikut haluan. Sehingga saat berada di baris depan, ia mulai menjadi komando untuk memimpin barisan dalam haluannya. Saat ini Nick masih berada di tengah. Revolusi yang ia lakukan baru sekedar gejolak diri sendiri. Nick masih punya daya tarik dan nama besar yang bisa ia manfaatkan untuk berjaya lagi, tapi 'Chains' tidak punya power yang dahsyat untuk menggebrak.
