Setelah megasukses 'Stay With Me', Sam Smith merilis 'I'm Not the Only One' yang bergerak dalam vibe serupa. Usut punya usut, kedua lagu tersebut dikerjakan oleh Sam bersama James Napier, yang kemudian membangun ekspektasi terhadap 'Lay Me Down', karya Sam-James lain, yang dirilis sebagai single kelima dari debut album sang artis.

Gloomy, pasti. Curchy, apalagi. Dua corak ini mencirikan gaya paling pas dan paling berterima di hati masyarakat terhadap musik Sam. Keluhan Sam terhadap kisah cintanya yang tak kunjung membahagiakan menjadi hiburan terbaik yang pendengar dapati dalam karya-karya. Sangat mungkin ini akan menjadi single pamungkas dari album perdana Sam. Telah ada 5 single untuk 10 track yang tersaji dalam edisi standar "In the Lonely Hour", angka yang cukup besar untuk mengelupas album.
