Walk the Moon mungkin band pengusung alternative rock, namun bukan berarti mereka tidak berani keluar dari zona aman dan mengeksplorasi sesuatu yang berbeda. Dan rasa-rasanya mereka cukup kerap melakukannya, termasuk dalam single 'Shut Up and Dance ' ini.

Lagu dibuka dengan beat yang berderap dan berdegup, namun alih-alih rock, justru mengindikasikan semangat pop, atau lebih tepatnya pop 80-an, dengan kuat. Ritmis, dan mengajak pendengarnya untuk bergerak mengikuti iramanya, sebagaimana yang terlampir di lagu, dance!

Meski begitu tentunya Walk the Moon tidak melupakan rock itu sendiri. Chorus menjadi sarana curahan riff gitar elektrik dan gebukan drum yang bersemangat, menghantarkan intensitas rock yang padat dan enerjetik.

Tapi memang menarik bagaimana Walk the Moon membangun verse lagu ini. Tidak hanya mengadopsi pop 80-an, bahkan mereka juga memasukkan funk pula di dalamnya, sehingga jika nuansa dance yang mereka kejar, maka bisa dikatakan telah tercapai dengan baik.

Memang, konsentrasi sang vokalis Nicholas Petricca dan gitaris Eli Maiman pada saat mengerjakan lagu ini memang awalnya hanya versenya. Mereka menggabungkan new wave dengan power pop dengan cukup cermat, dan berujung menjadi sebuah lagu dance. Barulah sentimen rock dibangun pada chorus, yang anehnya meski sebenarnya secara tone agak berbeda, justru bisa menyatu dengan baik secara keseluruhan, baik dengan verse ataupun kemudian bridge sebagai penyemarak.

Lagu ini diniatkan sebagai anthem letting go of frustration and to having fun dan rasa-rasanya misi tersebut sukses dilaksanakan.
