Ketika Chris Daughtry, frontman band Daughtry ini mengungkapkan bahwa musik yang mereka hasilka di album ketiga ini adalah sesuatu yang berbeda dari apa yang pernah mereka sajikan lewat 2 album terdahulu, itu ternyata langkah yang mereka buat untuk lebih menguatkan ciri rock dalam citra mereka. Maklum, orang-orang kenal Daughtry sebagai seseorang yang meraih ketenaran dari American Idol, ajang nyanyi yang identik dengan pop. Maka jadilah album “Break The Spell” sebagai deklarasinya. Rock yang akrab dengan musik yang keras dan kasar merupakan ciri utama pembeda album 3 ini. ‘Renegade’ adalah track pembuka yang mantap. Membuat kita terhentak, dan diyakinkan 100% pada tujuan yang ingin mereka capai di album ini, yaitu nge-rock secara total. Track lain yang sejalan dengan konsep demikian adalah ‘Outta My Head’, ‘Louder Than Ever’ dan ‘Maybe We’re Already Gone’. Teriakan Chris maksimal dalam membangun atensi.

Kita enggak sepenuhnya dibuat asing dengan taraf garang baru a la Daughtry. Karena lewat beberapa lagu, masih ada transisi terasa. Contohnya saja ‘Crawling Back To You’. Lagu yang dimulai dengan tempo santai ini berubah menjadi garang di bagian chorus lagu. Nuansa serupa bisa dijumpai di ‘Break The Spell’, ‘We’re Not Gonna Fall’, dan ‘Rescue Me’. It’s Howard Bensson after all, yang masih mengambil andil sebagai produser album ini, menjembatani peralihan tersebut sehingga tidak terkesan terlalu timpang. Tentunya lagu-lagu demikian juga menantang Chris secara vokal untuk mempertontonkan kebolehannya dalam mengolah vokal. Enggak hanya mengerang, dirinya dia mevariasikan vokal dengan lantunan yang lebih soft di ‘Losing My Mind’ dan ‘Crazy’.

Tidak melulu musik yang ribut untuk mengindikasikan seorang rockstar. Karena dalam musik yang slow, santai, pun bisa mengeluarkan aura tersebut. ‘Rescue Me’ contohnya. Ada moment yang membuat Chris relevan dengan vokalis rock legendaris seperti Steven Tyler. Setiap prhasing dalam chorus menciptakan moment tersebut. Dan kalau masa-masa musik yang tenang adalah hal yang paling kamu impikan di album ini, maka pilihan akan jatuh pada ‘Start Of Something Good’, ‘Everything But Me’, plus track paling sendu sealbum, ‘Lullaby’. Segitu pentingnya memang mempertegas citra di awal karir, supaya mereka tidak dicap sebagai sebuah band yang bermain dalam area abu-abu dan tidak punya haluan musik yang pasti. Terkadang definisi paling tepat untuk hal tersebut adalah alternative, dan itu adalah apa yang dihindari oleh band ini.

Di penampilan kedua ini, para juri berkomentar (atau lebih tepatnya memuji).
Randy: “These are the two that you chose. It’s so hard, it’s so even. Scotty, your reprisal of “Gone” was brilliant. The George Strait thing was really good.” Randy merasa babak 1 dimenangkan oleh Scotty, sedangkan babak 2 dimenangkan oleh Lauren.
Jennifer enggak terlalu suka lagu kedua Scotty layaknya lagu pertamanya. Dan dirinya pun beranggapan kalau ronde 1 dimenangkan oleh Scotty, ronde 2 oleh Lauren.
Steven memilih kedua ronde dimenangkan oleh Lauren.

Sebelum babak 3 berlanjut, penampilan hiburan oleh Taio Cruz membawakan lagu berjudul ‘Positive‘ yang adalah hasil program Perfect Harmony di americanidol.com selama putaran final berlangsung, yang disponsori oleh Coca Cola. Dan sampailah pada penampilan final, single pertama dari masing-masing grand finalis.

RJ:I’m just marveling that we have the two youngest finalist ever–the range was great–you sung low and you sang really high. SCOTTY YOU ARE IN IT TO WIN IT. That was a brilliant vocal.

RJ: A great ode to your mom, I love that support. I love how at the end, finally, the Lauren we met in auditions came back. THAT WAS AMAZING AMAZING.
JL: I think with that song you may have just won. It was beautiful. It was perfect for you.
ST: You just gave it up to your mom like this….You are an Idol in my eyes.

Dan, sampailah pada kata-kata terakhir dari para juri. Di ronde 3 ini, Randy memilih Lauren sebagai pemenang, sementara Jennifer enggak mau milih. Dan Steven juga memilih Lauren. As I say, bisa jadi Lauren bisa jadi Scotty. Sejauh ini mereka berdua enggak pernah mendapat penilai buruk dari para jurii. Bukan karena penampilan masing-masing yang tanpa cacat, tapi memang mereka anak emas. Enggak salah juga mereka yang tersisa sampe 2 besar, banyak penggemar. Babak pertama, Top 3 memilih sendiri lagu apa yang akan mereka nyanyikan. Beyonce, sang superstar (yang sangat tergambar dalam video presentasinya), memberi saran kepada para finalis tentang nyanyian dan penampilan. This is interesting, karena Beyonce sangat supportif kepada masing-masing sehingga membantu mereka untuk mengembangkan stage act.

Scotty McCreery – “Amaze” by Lonestar
ST: I think you just keep getting better and better. Did I hear you get angry during the modulation? You kicked that song in the middle of next week.
JL: You’ve grown so much as a performer.
RJ: Great song choice for you. I produced a version for Boyx II Men. Some pitchy spots, but the end of the song…wow you put a period on the end of the song. That’s money. Scotty’s got money!
AI: Ini sudah Top 3, dan aku enggak nyangka masih ada komentar juri mengenai picth. Menurutku itu tidak termaafkan. ST: You were having fun when we first met, you’re having fun now. You were singing like you were owning the song. You’re so ready for this. You’re ready for America to be all over you.

Akhir ronde 1. Randy, Jennifer, dan Steven sepakat untuk memilih Haley sebagai juaranya. Dan Ai Hasibuan pun demikian. Ronde 1 milik Haley Reinhart. Dan di ronde berikutnya, giliran Jimmy Iovine yang memberikan lagu. Pilihan lagu Jimmy memang tepat, membuat setiap kontestan berada pada elemen masing-masing.

ST: I never heard you deliver a chorus like that before. Real character shown through.
JL: There was so many moments in there I liked so much. That’s what the zone feels like–you feel so comfortable in your skin. Will you shave your head for the finale.
RJ: Jimmy picked a good song for you. It had a great chorus. I felt like Garth is such a great performer–you were approaching that garth level. I felt like I was in your concert again. Guess what I’m going to say again Ryan…SCOTTY’S IN IT TO WIN IT. Drink! Drink! Drink!

ST: I loved it I heard that turn around. It’s a beautiful song, you’ve got a beautiful voice. You nailed it again.
AI: Aku belum pernah dengar lagu ini sebelumnya. Pilihan yang tepat buat Lauren. Dirinya pun berasa terkait dengan lirik yang dinyanyikannya. (9/10)

Haley Reinhart – “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac
RJ: Why were you looking up like “thank God I got through that.” I think you did a good job with it. Your pitch was perfect. More of a somber mood for me.
ST: You sang that song so beautifully.
JL: It was a beautiful moment. It looked beautiful on camera. I thought you were going to take it a little further at the end, but it was a nice contrast to what you did first.
AI: Lagu yang sulit untuk dinyanyikan. Tapi Haley berhasil menyanyikannya dengan sangat indah. Penampilan panggungnya pun enggak kalah indah. (8/10)

Di ronde 2 ini, Steven memilih Lauren sebagai pemenangnya. Namun Randy dan Jennifer sepakat bahwa babak ini dimenangkan oleh Scotty. As for me, Scotty dan Lauren imbang. Dan melanjut ke babak terakhir, dimana mereka menyanyikan lagu yang dipilihkan oleh juri. Mereka masing-masing mengetahui pilihan lagu tersebut lewat SMS saat mereka berkunjung ke kampung halaman.

Scotty McCreery – “She Believes in Me” by Kenny Rogers
ST: That’s the first big chorus in a big way. You put it over the top for me.
JL: We wanted to see if you could hit that chorus. You showed us. It’s about you stretching yourself at this point.
RJ: It was a little different for you..you were so sweet and tender in the front, you hit the chorus..very nicely done.
AI: Yang ini justru membawa kembali Scotty ke penampilan pertamanya. Sangat biasa, enggak ada yang seru di penampilan ini. Dan menurutku lagi, jangkauan vokalnya Scotty enggak lebar. (7/10)

JL: You cannot buy those, those are not for sale. You gave me goosies from head to toe. I’m going to dare say you won that round already.
RJ: Leann would say you slayed it. I love your dress. You sang it great. Ryan this girl is also in it to win it.
ST: You walked down here like you owned the grand ole opry. You sang that song perfectly.

Result show akan sangat menarik dengan kombinasi apapun siapapun yang akan bertarung di grand final. Mungkin saja Scotty yang punya banyak pendukung dan Haley yang selama 3 minggu belakangan ini selalu mendapat standing ovation. Atau mungkin all girls final, dimana Haley akan berhadapan dengan Lauren. Atau bisa jadi all country final, saat Scotty dan Lauren bertarung. Tapi berdasarkan penampilan Top 3 ini, bagiku Lauren Alaina yang enggak akan melaju ke grand final. But then again, we never know.

JL: “You know what that showed me James. that you can sing anything. ‘Cause I wasn’t sure about that song for you, I’m gonna be honest…but you just told me that I was absolutely wrong.”
RJ: “You’re peaking at the right time, dude. You’re having a moment every single week and I love it.”
AI: Cara yang bagus untuk memulai acara. Tapi lagi-lagi James kehilangan kendali vokal dan para juri kehilangan kesadaran karena terlalu asyik menikmati apa yang disajikannya di panggung. Inilah alasan mengapa aku enggak suka aksi panggung seperti konser. (7.5/10)

Haley Reinhart – “Earthsong” by Michael Jackson
JL: “That song has a beautiful message, no doubt, but I want you to be thinking about (what everybody else is doing) when choosing. That’s part of competing.”
RJ: “Just keeping it really real…it confused me with who you are as an artist. It felt like to me you were screaming; you were at the top of your range.”
ST: “That song showed me that you can. It wasn’t a hit song but you sang it, you nailed it.”
AI: Interesting song choice, tapi J.Lo dan Randy malah sepakat menyebutnya wrong choice of song. Mungkin sangat sakit di hati mereka saat tahu Haley memilih lagu balada yang dinyanyikannya dengan caranya tanpa sedikitpun embel-embel “membosankan”. (8/10)

ST: “I saw you almost lose it in the middle because of your passion for what you were singing about. That’s real important, I see it in your eyes right now. You keep that up.”
JL: “I’m in love with you. I can’t help it…I can tell that you know who you are. I can tell you know what touches other people. And that is just, it’s the mark of really somebody who was meant to do this.”
AI: Untuk yang ini, aku kasih tepuk tangan buat juri yang memuji pilihan lagunya yang sangat tepat, sehingga tidak sedikitpun komentar mereka menyinggung vokalnya. Bukan, tidak ada masalah dengan nyanyian Scotty di lagu ini. Hanya saja enggak ada progress dari awal kehadirannya di American Idol hingga nyanyiannya ini. (8/10)

JL: “I really do feel like you’re listening to what we’re telling you. We may seem tough at times, but it’s all about helping you get there to that last moment.”
RJ: “America, Lauren is back in it to win it! That was hot…amazing, and a great time to do it.”
AI: Jadi teringat Kristy Lee Cook. Dia punya moment dengan lagu ini, di Top 7 dengan tema yang sama, inspirational. Lauren mengeluarkan kemampuan maksimalnya menyanyikan lagu ini. Nafasnya masih kurang panjang sehingga bagian akhir chorusnya enggak dinyanyikan dalam satu nafas. Tapi di babak 1, Lauren yang terbaiklah. (8.5/10)

ST: “This was a classic moment with classic Haley — you just Reinharted yourself into the middle of next week.”
AI: Aku suka komentar Steven Tyler, aku suka standing o yang dikasih para juri, aku suka penampilan Haley yang dramatis dibantu oleh Lady Gaga. Aku suka tak ada seorangpun yang ingat akan moment Jordin Sparks saat menyanyikan lagu ini di Idol 4 tahun lalu. (9/10)

JL: “It seems like you really hit your stride right now, and now it’s about the sprint kind of to the finish line.”
AI: Mestinya Scotty enggak menambah aroma Gaga dalam penampilannya. Dia sendiri udah punya cara untuk menampilkan lagu dengan cara yang eksentrik. Yang ini mengubah segalanya menjadi Scotty McCreepy. (5/10)

Lauren Alaina – “Trouble”
ST: “That was well done…there’s the character that came out again. And I just love you.”
JL: “I saw a performance quality in you when you came out of…that screen in the back that I had not seen in you before…it was total attack, and it was really, really good.”
RJ: “Like we were saying to Scotty earlier, we saw a fun side of you…it’s definitely kind of out of your typical, like, pop country kind of thing, and I actually really enjoyed it.”
AI: Ah, it was sassy, it was bitchy. Aku merasa Lauren terengah-engah menyanyikan bagian kedua lagunya, dimana dia harus gerak dan sebagainya. (7/10)

AI: Aku enggak yakin kalau aku lebih enjoy penampilan yang ini dari penampilannya yang pertama. Secara vokal sih memang lebih bagus yang ini, lebih terkontrol dan teriakannya sempurna. Tapi bagaimana dia menutup lagunya dengan suasana hening yang dibuat sampai 2 kali itu berlebihan. (8/10)

Beberapa blog memprediksi Haley Reinhart yang akan tersisih minggu ini. Tapi, bagaimana Amerika bisa mengeliminasi satu-satunya kontestan dengan standing o dalam 2 minggu berturut? Menurut buku sejarah AI 10, penampilan penutup selalu aman. Jadi James Durbin aman. Lauren Alaina dari 2 penampilannya adalah yang paling solid, jadi dia kemungkinan besar aman. Scotty McCreery selalu menjadi pengecualian, banyak yang vote untuknya. Dan memang akan sangat disayangkan kalau Haley Reinhart yang harus tersisih. But then again, we never know.

JL: One of the best voices that’s ever been on this stage. It’s going to be important that you pick songs that reflect who you are as an artist.
RJ: I don’t think that’s the direction for you. Most of it was sharp. I don’t see you as Chris Brown or Jordin Sparks. You’re the church kid, I see you as Luther. It doesn’t wear well.
ST: We’re waiting for you to find a niche. I love your voice, but I’m looking for that thing that’s 100% you. Great job tonight.
AI: Lihat bagaimana Jacob bisa menghancurkan hidup kita dengan penampilan ini. Pertama, dia mengambil cara Jordin untuk menyanyikannya dan menganggap bahwa berteriak sepanjang lagu adalah cara Jordin. Kedua, dia tidak faham bahwa timbre suaranya enggak matching untuk semua lagu. Ketiga, aksi panggungnya jauh lebih buruk dari apa yang biasa aku berikan odong-odong awards. JL: I love the way you sounded. I’m just not sure it was a cool idea to do an unreleased Lady Gaga track.

JL: Everyone knows you can sing, You have the heart and soul to back it up. You are a true true artist. It takes a lot to control your emotions and deliver what you just did.
