Wouter De Backer atau biasa disebut di panggung dengan “Gotye” adalah musisi berdarah Belgia-Australia yang sebelumnya telah bergabung di band indie pop yaitu The Basics sebagai penabuh drum. Dan sama seperti drummer yang banting setir jadi penyanyi/vokalis macam Phil Collins atau Dave Grohl, Gotye melanjutkan tradisi tersebut.

Tiga album sudah dirilis secara independen dan kali ini lewat album “Making Mirrors” dia berhasil menggebrak dunia dengan singlenya yaitu “Somebody That I Used To Know” yang menampilkan solois perempuan asal negara tetangganya yaitu Selandia Baru. Single ini menjadi sensasional ketika di negaranya sendiri mampu bertahan selama 8 minggu di puncak chart single dan membuat Gotye menjadi artis Australia pertama yang mampu bertahan selama itu semenjak duo Savage Garden dengan “Truly Madly Deeply” di tahun 1997. Single ini juga menjadi jawara di Triple J Hottest 100 untuk tahun 2011 dimana ajang tersebut bergengsi bagi kalangan pecinta alternative music di Australia. Single ini juga meraih sukses di Eropa terutama di Belgia, Belanda, Jerman, Polandia, Austria dan membuat Kimbra menjadi melejit di Australia dan Selandia Baru. Bahkan di Polandia single ini mampu memuncaki klasemen single di sana selama 15 minggu. Dan single ini juga menjadi favorit Ashton Kutcher dan juga Katy Perry.

Apa yang membuat single ini bisa menjadi jawara di mana-mana dan menjadi hit yang tidak diduga-duga? Racikan indie pop yang simple dengan petikan gitar yang lembut dan juga permainan xylophone yang menggoda membuat single ini bisa menembus segala batas pendengarnya. Pembuka gitar akustik yang mellow dan xylophone yang terkesan imut membuka lagu ini lengkap dengan suara yang catchy dan berat dari Gotye. Disini juga sesekali Gotye memainkan nada-nada yang bisa dibilang tinggi namun tidak terkesan girly. Teknik musik yang dipakai memang bisa kita temukan di beberapa rekaman indie pop 90′an. Kimbra disini juga mampu menguatkan lagu dengan part dia yang seakan menjawab bait per bait dari Gotye sehingga mereka bisa membuat sebuah percakapan ke dalam bait-bait lagu. Vokal Kimbra juga bisa dibilang manis, memang orang akan mengira bahwa dia mengambil range vokal seperti Katy Perry. Disini Kimbra bukan menjadi selipan di lagu seperti yang biasa kita dengar di artis yang menampilkan featuring, namun dia seolah menyatu dari lagu ini dan bersifat komplementer di lagu. Teknik musik yang dipakai memang menyentuh baroque pop.

Lirik yang ditampilkan Gotye memang bisa dikatakan galau (seperti yang sedang booming belakangan ini) tentang seseorang yang ditinggal pergi oleh kekasihnya tanpa sebab yang jelas dan ketika sang lelaki mau kembali membina hubungan ternyata satu sama lain sudah putus komunikasi dan sudah saling membenci seperti seseorang yang dulunya pernah dikenalnya, sangat dramatis bukan?. Namun disini Gotye cerdik memainkan beat lagunya, meskipun dia tahu bahwa single ini bisa menjadi amat sangat mellow (seperti penyanyi berinisial A dan L yang selalu membawakan lagu mellow dengan gaya amat mellow) dia disini menghindari suasana galau dan membawa single ini dengan tempo medium-beat dengan arsiran instrumental yang kaya dan tidak mengandal vokal mellow se-mellownya terbukti dengan beat yang bisa membuat kaki kita sedikit bergoyang dengan lantunannya dengan tempo lagu yang terus terjaga keasyikannya hingga akhir. Sehingga lagu ini mampu melintasi beberapa pendengar yang jenis musiknya berbeda.

Single ini bisa dikatakan sebuah suatu single yang sangat apik dan sangat epik baik dari segi aransemen indie pop nya dan juga dari tema dan beat lagu. Jadi wajar saja single ini bisa populer di kalangan musik Eropa dikarenakan single ini akan mengingatkan kita akan beberapa artis dari Labrador Records yang selalu menerbitkan karya indie pop yang mumpuni di Eropa. Memang dalam sejarah musik populer jarang sekali ada track yang bergenre indie pop bisa menjadi international hit single, namun euforia musik yang membuat orang berpesta dan mabuk karenanya sudah berakhir dan memang saatnya single beraroma pop,soul bahkan indie pop sudah siap untuk merajai dunia sebagai bentuk resistensi terhadap dance-pop yang makin generik.

Ketika mendengar ‘Tonight Tonight’ dan ‘I Like It Like That’, I gotta feeling kalau sealbum akan terdengar serupa; pop dancey dan immature. Tapi kenyataannya, “Whatever” lebih kompleks dari itu. Album ini melebihi ekspektasi pendengar yang sudah terlebih dahulu punya penilaian. Hot Chelle Rae jago dalam menyusun strategi, menampilkan hot danceable tracks sebagai single andalannya, sementara di dalam album ini juga tersimpan track-track yang enggak kalah matang ramuan musiknya. Enggak boleh pandang sebelah mata pada Ryan Follesé, Nash Overstreet, Ian Keaggy, dan Jamie Follesé.

Meskipun “Whatever” bukanlah rekaman paling permulaan, tapi dalam rekaman ini ada single yang membuat nama mereka menembus pasaran. ‘Tonight Tonight’ sebagai perpaduan antara pop rock dengan dancepop diterima baik oleh pendengar. American Music Awards pun setuju akan hal itu sehingga menobatkan mereka sebagai Artis Pendatang Bary terbaik di tahun 2011 lalu. Kesuksesan mereka membuat rock akrab dengan dancefloor dilanjutkan dalam ‘I Like It Like That’ sebagai single kedua. Ini membuat pandangan terhadap konsepsi musik mereka yang “teen” muncul. Apalagi di single keduanya mereka punya paduan hip-hop yang dihadirkan lewat rap oleh duo New Boyz. Jadilah gado-gado musik yang mereka jual sebagai jembatan antara musik rock dengan lahan musik lain; dancepop, electropop, ataupun hip-hop.

Lagi, kolaborasi mereka dengan produser musik pop seperti SAM Hollander dan Emanuel Kiriakou melunakkan kerasnya citra rock sehingga erangan gitar dan gebukan drum dalam album ini terdengar jinak. ‘Honestly’, ‘Forever Unstoppable’, dan ‘The Only One’ ramah dengar. Lagu-lagu yang seperti ini juga yang sebenarnya mengangkat “marwah” mereka dari citra band kelas “pensi SMA” menjadi band “serius”. Dan kalau ingin mendekatkan mereka pada ciri musik artis lain yang lebih dulu muncul, silahkan dekatkan nama Hot Chelle Rae pada New Radicals dan Good Charlotte. Avril Lavigne pun masuk dalam hitungan. Surprise-nya justru di ‘Beautiful Freaks’ saat melodi dalam lagu dan hook “o-o-o”-nya mengingatkan pada Enrique Iglesias. I wonder why is that.

Terkadang muncul praduga bahwa vokalis band ini kurang bisa diandalkan secara vokal. Tapi lagi-lagi hal tersebut salah. Dengarkan ‘Keep You With Me’ untuk mendapatkan moment vokal terbaik sang vokalis. Dan kalau ingin mendengarkannya beradu vokal dengan Demi Lovato, ada ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’ yang T.O.P.B.G.T. Keduanya membuktikan kalau Ryan Follesé adalah vokalis yang baik. Pada awalnya itu semua adalah judgement, dan akhirnya justru menjadi sebuah pembuktian. Dengarkan “Whatever” untuk mengetahui Hot Chelle Rae seutuhnya. Mereka bukan sekedar numpang lewat, they’re here to stay!
