Ketika Miley Cyrus menelurkan Can’t Be Tamed-nya dalam rangka mengubah imagenya menjadi dewasa. Ketika Demi Lovato tercekik tragedi perkelahian dengan seseorang, yang secara tidak langsung diubah imagenya dari good girl gone bad. Selena tetap berada di jalannya, tak berusaha untuk melenceng, tetap menjadi diri sendiri. Selena tak hanya menyanyikan lagunya, tapi juga ‘mengamalkannya’.

Bait pertama lagu, Selena menceritakan tentang seseorang yang hobinya menjatuhkan dirinya, tapi ia tetap berusaha untuk tak mengubah dirinya. Seseorang itu adalah para haters yang bertebaran di mention twitter Selena. Tapi gadis 19 tahun itu menyelesaikan soal haters ini dengan bijak.

Sebelum memasuki reff, Selena memberi sebaris quote simple yang manis dan dinyanyikan dengan powerful. ‘I’m no beauty queen, I’m just beautiful me.’ Secara tidak langsung, Selena berkata, “Kita tidak perlu secantik ratu. Karena sebenarnya, kita sudah cantik di jalan kita.”

Dan daya tarik lagu ini adalah reffrainnya. Who says you’re not perfect. Who says you’re not worth it. Who says you’re the only that’s hurting. Trust me, that’s the price of beauty. Who says you’re not pretty. Who says you’re not beautiful. Lirik reffrainnya yang inspiring dibawakan dengan musik yang easy listening, radio friendly, dan fun. Berapapun umurmu, lagu ini pantas untuk didengar. Inilah lagu yang dibutuhkan anak-anak dan para remaja di seluruh dunia. Bisa dikatakan lagu ini adalah versi remaja dari Firework-nya Katy Perry.

Sepertinya inilah lagu terbaik milik Selena. Tak ada aroma dance seperti single sebelumnya, A Year Without Rain. Menurut saya, single ini adalah single yang berani. Tak banyak musik teen pop yang beredar di era ini. Musik dance bertebaran di mana-mana saat ini. Coba tengok chart-chart, bisa dipastikan, kebanyakan lagu yang bertengger di chart itu adalah musik dance. Tapi Selena dengan lagunya yang bertajuk Who Says berani menganut musik teen pop. Dan hasilnya? Mampu menduduki peringkat 24 di hot 100 chart Billboard. Bertengger di peringkat 9 di iTunes US. Merebut posisi 17 di chart hot 100 Canada chart.

Suara Selena juga menyatu dengan lagu ini. Natural. Tampaknya suara Selena lebih pas di lagu-lagu teen pop seperti ini, ketimbang dance pop. Dan satu lagi, less auto tune on this song! Itulah yang membuat lagu ini mendapat nilai plus. Sejatinya, Who Says bukanlah lagu yang ingin menembak pasar, meraup untung sebanyak-banyaknya. Kalau pun ingin menembak pasar, pastinya akan ada bumbu dance seperti A Year Without Rain yang jelas-jelas dibuat hanya untuk mengikuti selera pasar. Selena hanya ingin mempersembahkan lagu ini untuk kita semua. Agar kita bisa mencintai diri sendiri dan tak perlu mendengar kata-kata yang diucapkan para haters. Who says this song is not perfect?
