Ada yang berubah dari seorang Katy Perry, disaat memang sedang ramai-ramainya musik electropop sedang bergema, melalui single terbarunya "California Gurls" tampaknya Katy Perry seolah tidak mau ketinggalan. Setelah debut albumnya Katy lebih cenderung ke arah pop rock, tetapi ditangan Max Martin, Benny Blanco serta Dr. Luke yang sebelumnya memang sudah bekerja sama pada album perdananya, tampaknya mencoba pasar mainstream yang lebih luas lagi. "California Gurls" yang dibawakan bersama rapper kawakan Snoop Doog memang catchy, simple dan ditulis oleh Katy Perry, Bonnie McKee, Calvin Broadus, Max Martin, serta Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald.
"Greetings loved ones, lets take a journey" merupakan celotehan awal Snoop Doog yang menjadikan penanda pembuka lagu ini. Inti dari lirik lagu ini sebenernya sederhana, menceritakan kehangatan suasana California baik itu di taman maupun di pantai, terutama saaat musim panas dan ciri khas wanita California yang menggoda, coba perhatikan liriknya:
"California girls, We're unforgettable, Daisy Dukes, Bikinis on top, Sun-kissed skin, So hot, will melt your popsicle, Oooooh Oh Oooooh".
Musiknya sendiri berada pada med-tempo pada 50 detik pertama, dan menit berikutnya menuju hook yang menghentak yang semakin menohok mengasyika, ditambah vokal rapp Snoop Dogg membuat single ini di dengarkan berkali-kali akan membuat ketagihan.
Dibuat sebagai tandingan atau jawaban terhadap "Empire State of Mine" milik Jay Z? Saya hanya mengindikasikan, jika Jay Z bisa memaparkan bagaimana suasana kota New York, maka pada "California Gurls" , Katy memaparkan California seperti apa. Meski musiknya sekilas mengingatkan saya akan single "Hot 'n' Cold", memiliki beat-beat yang sama dengan single "Tik Tok" nya Ke$ha, namun komposisinya memang berbeda. Meski tidak ada yang special dari single ini, meski sebetulnya Katy bisa membuat singe yang bisa lebih bagus dan menarik. Tetapi, jika menikmati saat-saat santai terutama cuaca cerah, dan ingin melepaskan kebosanan, "California Gurls" patut disimak dan menjadi pilihan. Sebagai single pembuka sebelum album baru dirilis, prestasi luar biasa berhasil ditorehkan dengan berhasil masuk ke posisi 2 Hot 100 dan saya berharap akan banyak single yang menarik kedepannya.
