Hold It Against Me, single petama dari album ketujuh Britney Spears yang akan rilis di bulan maret ini. Masih dengan tim lama Max Martin dan Dr. Luke (Baby One More Time, Oops... I Did It Again, If U Seek Amy). Seperti hal nya single hits 3, Womanizer, Gimme More, lagu Hold It Against me ini tipikal tipe-tipe lagu dance hits dengan lirik menggoda/seductive "If I said I want your body now/ Would you hold it against me?" serta "You feel like paradise and I need a vacation tonight".
Dengan ramainya tipe musik serupa ini seperti pada lagu We R Who We R (Ke$ha), California Gurls (Katy Perry) dan Poker Face (Lady Gaga), lagu Britney kali ini terasa lebih edgy dan dark dari lagu-lagunya sebelum ini. Dengan beat synth ala Euro Rave Dance tahun 90an, dentuman bass, dan pola lagu yang tidak predictable, mulai dengan pelan, namun makin keras dan intens di tengah sampai ujung lagu, rasanya lagu ini masih bisa membawa Brit bersaing ditengah gempuran dance pop female artists yang muncul belakangan.
Vocal Britney yang masih diberi sedikit efek Auto Tune, memang masih sering memancing kritik yang meragukan mutu vocal nya. Hey! Tapi ini dance music. Everybody knows Britney's voice isn't so good. But Who cares?! Tidak perlu suara semerdu Mariah Carey atau Celine Dion untuk membawakan genre seperti ini, tapi lebih kepada pesona penyanyi dan koreografi tarian di video klip nya yang membuat orang menyukai artis-artis seperti Ms. Spears.
Lagu ini memang dancefloor friendly, dengan refrain pop yang likeable, terasa mirip dengan formula yang dipakai Black Eyed Peas di album terakhirnya. Memadukan unsur modern dengan unsur lagu retro yang melodius dan gampang diingat. Suka atau tidak, cewek yang satu ini telah berevolusi seiring waktu selama 12 tahun karirnya, mulai dari princess of pop sampai dengan dance diva, dan tetap menarik perhatian orang dengan musiknya, walau berita kontroversial kadang lebih dominan.
