Single of The Day: Girls’ Generation – The Boys 

“Girl’s Generation make ’em feel the heat.” Do you feel the heat? Because Girls’ Generation make me sweatin’ like it’s summer all over again!

Setelah kurang lebih satu tahun fokus pada promosi albumnya di Jepang, Girls’ Generation kembali ke negara asalnya, Korea Selatan, untuk mengukuhkan kembali posisi mereka sebagai girlband nomor satu di dunia. Empat tahun berkarir, GG, sebagaimana member Jessica menyebutnya dalam lagu terbaru mereka, berhasil mencetak lagu-lagu yang kepopulerannya tidak hanya di Asia namun juga di dunia. Sebut saja si super catchy Gee dan Oh, si sexy Tell Me Your Wish (Genie), atau si retro-ish Hoot.

Melalui lagu terbaru mereka, The Boys, GG menyuguhkan tampilan yang sangat fresh dan lebih dewasa dari konsep-konsep album sebelumnya. Mengincar pasar internasional, GG bekerja sama dengan Teddy Riley yang merupakan produser dari Michael Jackson dan Lady GaGa untuk menangani lagu andalan dari album ketiga ini agar terdengar lebih international-sounding.

The Boys adalah lagu urban-pop dengan sentuhan musik electro yang membuatnya tidak terdengar outdated. Kesembilan personil Girls’ Generation membuka lagu dengan intro yang tenang sebelum bunyi drum yang menghentak masuk dan tempo lagu berubah menjadi cepat. Masuk ke bagian chorus, GG berteriak layaknya sekumpulan cheerleaders dan menunjukkan kepercayaan diri mereka melalui liriknya yang bertemakan girl power. Edgy, sassy, and fierce!

Saya sendiri mengklasifikasikan lagu ini kedalam tipe grower, tipe lagu yang baru akan terasa feel-nya setelah beberapa kali didengarkan. Ini bukan hal yang jelek, justru sebetulnya bagus. Kebanyakan lagu seperti ini adalah lagu-lagu yang timeless, lagu yang tidak mudah dilupakan yang lima atau sepuluh tahun lagi didengarkan pun tidak akan terasa membosankan. To be honest, I prefer this type of song rather than some catchy/earworm type of song that’s gonna be forgotten after a month or less.

Saya rasa The Boys adalah lagu yang tepat bagi GG untuk debut di Amerika. Melihat musik yang sedang trend saat ini; dance-heavy electro house, satu-satunya cara agar grup dari Asia dapat ‘terlihat’ adalah dengan menyuguhkan sesuatu yang berbeda dan terkesan unik. Dan GG berhasil melakukannya. Terbukti dari kesuksesan lagu ini merajai chart-chart di dunia, mulai dari posisi #1 di iTunes Jepang hingga #56 di iTunes US hingga post ini dibuat. Pretty awesome, right?

Jadi, akankah Girls’ Generation menjadi girlband pertama yang benar-benar memiliki nama di kancah industri musik Amerika dan dunia? Semua masih belum pasti. Satu lagu sukses belum dapat menggambarkan bagaimana karir musik GG kedepannya. Namun, ada satu hal yang dapat GG pastikan untuk para penikmat musik di seluruh dunia: “We’re born to win. Better tell all your friends. ‘Cause we get it in. You know the girls!”
