The Champ milik Nelly dibuka dengan hentakan marching yang bersemangat! Di awal mendengarnya, kita akan terbawa suasana seperti berada di sebuah stadiun yang megah, dihiasi dengan permainan synth serta dentingan piano yang begitu playful. Selanjutnya, Nelly mulai menyanyikan lagu bergenre hip-hop ini dengan tempo yang upbeat. Ia sendiri hanya melakukan rap pada bagian bridge. Meski terdengar sederhana dan terlalu cheesy, tidak dapat dipungkiri lagu ini adalah lagu pop yang sangat easy listening, membuat siapapun yang mendengarnya akan merasa cheery setelah mendengarnya.
Liriknya sendiri menggambarkan semangat juang dari para atlet yang akan bertanding. Jika dilihat dari tujuan awal lagu ini diciptakan – yaitu untuk mendukung musim pertandingan football di Amerika sana – jelas lagu ini sangat cocok untuk menjadi anthem selama kompetisi berlangsung. Kesan sportivitas dan mimpi yang menjadi tumpuan para atlet untuk berjuang menjadi sang juara digambarkan dengan jelas dalam liriknya. Penggemar olahraga ataupun tidak, begitu mendengar lagu ini, kau pasti akan merasa seperti penikmat olahraga sejati karena nada dan liriknya berpadu dengan baik dalam lagu ini.
Banyak yang mengatakan bahwa lagu ini adalah bukti bahwa kualitas Nelly kian meredup – ah, tetapi setidaknya, lagu ini tetap catchy dan menarik untuk didengarkan saat musim pertandingan berlangsung.
