Sejak terbentuk pada 1999, The All-American Rejects sampai saat ini telah berumur hampir 13 tahun. That’s quite long journey for them being a band. Tanggal 26 Maret kemarin, The Rejects merilis album ke-4 mereka, Kids In The Street, terpaut empat tahun dari album ke-3 mereka, When the World Comes Down. Jeda empat tahun mungkin akan membuat orang-orang mengira The Rejects already died. Actually they aren’t. In the mean time, mereka sibuk berpartisipasi dalam summer Warped Tour, tur bersama Blink 182 dan Taking Back Sunday, sempat mengisi soundtrack Alice In Wonderland juga, dan tentunya memproduksi album baru.
Kids in the Street dimulai dengan rilisnya promotional song, Someday’s Gone, yang dapat diunduh secara gratis di website mereka pada 3 Desember 2011. Fans juga langsung dapat menikmati music video lagu tersebut di official website. Kemudian disusul rilis single pertama, Beekeeper’s Daughter, pada 31 Januari. Title track Kids in the Street rilis pada 13 Maret, then the album itself dropped in 26 March.
Album ini berisi 11 tracks dengan track pertama Someday’s Gone yang masih sangat berciri khas The Rejects seperti hits-hits mereka sebelumnya. Rock and roll bar kind of songs with spitting, reckless and cursing lyrics. Someday’s Gone sangat pas dijadikan promotional song. Badass alarming song tell us that The Rejects still alive. Tapi pada saat yang sama beberapa mungkin akan khawatir kalau The Rejects akan stagnan di musik yang seperti itu-itu saja. Continue to further tracks, this will be proved wrong. Beekeeper’s Daughter mirip dengan Someday’s Gone, hanya sedikit lebih fun ala 90’s beach jam. Track ketiga, Fast and Slow, bagus! Di track ini mereka mencoba menggunakan efek synthesizers. Track ini menjadi sangat groovy and fun to listen. Heartbeat Slowing Down dan Out The Door, menjadi track yang quite sadly emotional, Straightjacket Feeling look alike. Walk Over Me masih mengusung musik ciri khas The Rejects, upbeat rock and roll dengan efek funky guitar riff. Title track Kids in the Street, bagus banget! Love both its lyric and music. Track ini seperti halnya Fast and Slow, menjadi track yang sangat fresh dari The Rejects. Piano, synthesizers, futuristic guitar, groovy vocal are just perfect ingredients. Bleed Into Your Mind dan Gonzo juga merupakan track yang menawarkan sesuatu yang baru dari The Rejects. Di track ini mereka bermain dengan tempo lambat dan menampilkan detail-detail along the way. Affection merupakan track yang cukup istimewa. Slow bitrate, kind of using crescendo, di beberapa bagian agak mirip John Lennon’s Imagine All The People, tapi di akhir-akhir kembali lagi seperti The Rejects seperti biasa. Track I For You dimainkan secara akustik seperti halnya Straightjacket Feeling. Walaupun tidak sedasyat SF, track ini cukup menjadi sweet closing for entire album.
Well, shout out for The All-American Rejects yang sudah menghasilkan track-track fresh dan belum pernah ada di diskografi mereka selama ini seperti Fast and Slow, Kids in the Street, Bleed Into Your Mind, Gonzo dan Affection.Jika ini merupakan direction mereka kedepannya, well this is a very good thing. Fast and Slow dan Kids in the Street adalah highlight tracks dari album ini. Track-track ini pantas disejajarkan dengan hits-hits The Rejects selama ini. Dua track ini juga membuktikan bahwa The Rejects mampu menghasilkan amazing songs diluar lagu-lagu prototype mereka. While, Bleed Into Your Mind, Gonzo dan Affection cukup fresh dan enjoyable tapi bagi fans yang tidak begitu suka lagu slow, mungkin tidak akan stick around much dengan tracks ini.
Di sisi lain, mungkin untuk menjaga fanbase atau supaya tetap ada benang merah, di Kids in the Street ini mereka juga masih menghasilkan track-track yang seperti dulu. Someday’s Gone, Beekeper’s Daughter, Heartbeat Slowing Down, Walk Over Me, Out The Door dan I For You. Track-track prototype ini mungkin akan lebih sedikit rotation-nya di playlist daripada track-track fresh di atas. Juga least enjoyable track berada di kelompok track-track ini.
Finally, die-hard The Rejects fans kayaknya musti beli album ini. While the others, The Rejects sekarang lagunya ada yang jenis baru lho, and its awesome. Tapi yang comme ci comme ca ada juga.
“We used to laugh, we used to cry. Live and die by the forty-five. Take me back, i’ll go there. Who could stop us, and who would care? Always keep, to the kids in the street.”—cause we’re all basically Kids in the Street.
