Mungkin banyak orang yang belum familiar dengan kedua nama ini, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, jadi mari kita coba untuk sedikit lebih mengenal kedua orang ini sebelum kita membahas lagunya. Macklemore adalah seorang rapper asal Seattle, Washington yang sudah berkarir sejak tahun 2000 dan sudah merelease beberapa EP secara independent sedangkan Ryan Lewis adalah seorang DJ serta producer yang juga berasal dari Seattle, Washington. Kedua orang ini sudah bekerja sama sejak tahun 2008 lalu namun baru meraih kesuksesan pada akhir tahun 2012 lalu ketika mereka merelese single terakir dari album mereka yang berjudul The Heist. Seperti apa sebenarnya lagu Thrift Shop ini? Apakah yang membuat lagu ini bisa meraih kesuksesan seperti sekarang ini? Mari kita simak bersama-sama.
Melihat lebih jauh ke dalam single berdurasi 3:55 ini, Thrift Shop ditulis oleh Macklemore dan diproduseri oleh Ryan Lewis. Dalam lagu ini mereka mengajak penyanyi RnB yang bernama Wanz untuk menyanyikan chorus dari lagu ini. Sebenarnya apa kekuatan lagu ini sehingga bisa sukses merajai chart Billboard serta ARIA? Sejak intro lagu ini dimulai kita sudah bisa merasakan keunikan serta ke-catchy-an dari lagu ini. Lagu ini dibuka oleh sebuah line dari seorang anak kecil yang mengatakan ‘Hey Macklemore, can we go Thrift shopping?’ dan ketika musik dari lagu ini mulai perhatian kita pasti akan tertuju pada sound trumpet yang dimainkan oleh Owour Arunga. Perpaduan antara beat yang funky serta melodi dari trumpet inilah yang membuat lagu ini menjadi catchy serta mudah diterima. Macklemore mungkin bukanlah rapper yang ada di industry musik namun flow rap Macklemore dalam lagu ini terasa pas dan chorus yang dinyanyikan Wanzpun turut menambah ke-cacthy-an lagu ini. Tidak hanya dari segi musik, dari segi tema dan lyric lagu inipun terkesan unik dengan mengangkat Thrift Shop sebagai keseluruhan tema untuk lagu ini. Untuk yang tidak tahu, Thrift Shop adalah sebutan untuk toko yang menjual barang bekas dan biasanya keuntungan dari toko ini disumbangkan atau digunakan untuk kegiatan sosial.
Secara keseluruhan, Thrift Shop memberi angin segar untuk industry musik saat ini dimana sebagian besar lagu yang terkenal saat ini masih mengandalkan tema cinta sebagai sajian utamanya. Lagu Thrift Shop ini meraih kesukesan pertama kali di Negara Australia serta New Zealand dimana lagu ini peak pada posisi 1 dan baru minggu kemarinlah lagu ini juga akhirnya berhasil menjadi juara 1 chart Billboard Hot 100. Dengan suksesnya single Thrift Shop ini maka pada bulan February ini Macklemore dan Ryan Lewis mengadakan konser di Australia dimana tiket untuk shownya di Sydney langsung sold out hanya dalam beberapa hari sejak tiket mulai dijual.
