Silahkan menyebut ini gila, tapi lewat 'The Way' yang menampilkan Mac Miller, Ariana Grande dibanding-bandingkan dengan artis papan atas. Ga tanggung-tanggung, artis yang belum genap berusia 20 tahun itu disandingkan dengan Diva Mariah Carey atas penampilan vokalnya untuk single ini. Tak cukup vokal, musik R&B yang disajikan pun menjadi bahan omongan. Beat R&B yang meraja menimbulkan nostalgia yang murni akan keabsahan sound dari bagaimana eksekusi rhythm and blues itu seharusnya terdengar.
Dari mana asal Ariana? Ia adalah seorang bintang televisi Nickelodeon yang mulai memamerkan vokalnya sedari tahun 2011 lalu. Dalam single Mika, 'Popular Song', ia ikut menyumbangkan vokal. So, Ariana Grande bukanlah nama yang seutuhnya baru untuk urusan pamer vokal. Tapi dalam 'The Way' ia seolah membuat momentum untuk membawa A-game nya, lebih dari yang sebelumnya. And it works perfectly. Orang-orang menyerbu iTunes setelah ia tersedia disana.
Pujian untuk Harmony Samuels dan tim (yang salah satunya adalah Jordin Sparks) yang menyerahkan lagu cinta ini pada Ariana. Sekali lagi, eksekusi yang sempurna, sehingga menjadi statement yang kuat dalam peletakan batu pertama untuk pondasi karir musik sang artis. Ia tak cuma berusaha memenangkan cinta sang pujaan hati, tapi lewat 'The Way', ia juga menghasilkan hit. Saya tak begitu melihat pengaruh yang Mac Miller ciptakan disini, karena jelas semuanya adalah tentang Ariana Grande.
P.S. Album perdana Ariana Grande ternyata berjudul "Daydreamin'", sedikit mirip dengan salah satu judul album Mariah Carey, "Day Dream". Jangan salahkan Mariah kalau ia menjadi salah seorang yang inspirational. Tapi bisa saja ia kemudian berkomentar sesuai quote dari film favoritnya, "Mean Girls" kepada Ariana. "Why are you so obsessed with me?".
