Keberadaan Goo Goo Dolls yang sangat berpengaruh di dekade 90-an begitu melekat di ingatan, sehingga ketika mereka membuat nafas lanjutan dari karir rekaman, band ini seperti selalu tersedot ke masa kejayaan itu dalam pandangan eksistensi. Tapi ketika menilai perjuangan, pandangan lain justru akan memunculkan komentar positif. Tahun ini rencananya, John Rzeznik dkk akan merilis album berjudul "Magnetic". Tapi sebelum itu datang, terlebih dahulu ada suguhan 'Rebel Beat'. Single ini merupakan hasil godokan John bersama produser Gregg Wattenberg.
Sebelumnya saya tak pernah memperhitungkan Goo Goo Dolls sebagai pemeriah suasana. Mereka selalu menjadi band penyaji emosi dan ceritera kepada saya. Dan itu semua berubah seketika dengan 'Rebel Beat' ini. Ada "kelainan" yang terasa, dan kelainan itu bernama fun! Atmosfer keprok-keprok dan sing-along tercipta secara otomatis sedari detik awal lagu dimulai. Prasangka bisa terjadi bahwa ini merupakan efek dari kolaborasi band dengan Gregg. Kenyataannya adalah ini bukan kali pertama mereka bergandengan buat karya musik, karena sebelumnya Gregg hadir untuk Goo Goo Dolls di "Let Love In". Sehingga kesimpulan "perjuangan eksistensi" merupakan alasan yang paling masuk akal dalam evolusi sound yang terjadi.
Menjadi eksperimental merupakan sebuah langkah besar yang pernah dilakukan. Lihatlah, Train merombak musik mereka dalam 'Hey, Soul Sister' dan berhasil mendapatkan pencitraan sound baru yang kemudian menjadi senjata terampuh mereka untuk saat ini. Sementara untuk Goo Goo Dolls, mereka belum mencapai level yang sama, namun memiliki potensi untuk menuju ke arah sana. Dan ketika ada iming-iming fun yang ditawarkan di ujung sana, saya rasa setiap insan pasti tak berniat untuk melewatkan kesempatan untuk merengguhnya dan melakukan perjalanan melewati lorong berdurasi 3 menit 34 detik bernama 'Rebel Beat' ini.
