Sang princess of rock, Avril Lavigne, kembali ke "habitatnya" dengan Rock N Roll, yang merupakan single keduanya dari album self-titled-nya setelah Here’s to Never Growing Up yang lebih santai, Avril kini menghadirkan single yang sangat kental dengan nuansa rock n roll. Tidak heran, karena judulnya saja sudah Rock N Roll.
Ditulis oleh Avril bersama Peter Svensson, Rickard B Goransson, J Kash, Chad Kroeger dan David Hodges, kekuatan utama lagu mungkin terdapat dalam chorusnya yang anthemik dan sangat mengundang pendengar untuk ikut bernyanyi bersama lagunya.
Dengan beat drum yang berderap dan gitar elektrik yang mengiringi, Rock N Roll memang agak mengingatkan akan I Love Rock 'n' Roll, hits klasik milik Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker of Arrows yang kemudian dipopulerkan oleh Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. Semangat rock yang menggebu menjadi warna utama dari kedua lagu ini sehingga memang terdengar agak mirip.
Meski begitu, Rock N Roll lebih cenderung terdengar seperti sebuah lagu yang dinyanyikan oleh seorang Avril Lavigne ketimbang orang lain. Dan ini merupakan sebuah pujian, yang artinya Avril Lavigne memang memiliki ciri khas tersendiri yang sulit untuk dipersamakan dengan orang lain.
Ciri khas tersebut dapat ditemui dalam vokalnya yang manis, tentu saja, dan sentuhan pop yang lebih kental daripada lagu rock biasa. Memang, pop-punk yang dulu biasa kita dengar dari Avril Lavigne sudah nyaris sulit untuk dikenali, akan tetapi setidaknya ia masih tetap terdengar seperti seorang rocker.
Masalahnya, ini mungkin menyebabkan Rock N Roll terdengar jenerik ketimbang menawarkan sesuatu yang baru atau segar. Ia terlalu mengulang lagu Avril Lavigne yang kemudian dipoles dengan sedikit sentuhan I Love Rock 'n' Roll tadi.
Meski begitu, dengan single ini Avril seolah menegaskan jika album gressnya dipastikan akan sangat “keras” namun tak kehilangan setuhan feminim, seperti halnya single ini.
