Britney Spears memang tidak ada matinya. The Kween is a perfect example about determination and resilient in pop music industry. Dan album kedelapan siap dipersembahkan untuk penikmat musik pop dunia. Single pertamanya adalah sebuah lagu yang berjudul cukup provokatif, Work Bitch.
Spears menulis langsung lagu ini bersama will.i.am, Anthony Preston, Otto Jettman dan Ruth-Anne Cunningham. will.i.am dan Preston juga bertugas sebagai produser. Sebagimana produksi will.i.am, Work Bitch juga kental dengan EDM. Tentunya ini tidak asing bagi Spears yang mengadopsi EDM semenjak Femme Fatale. Agak mengingatkan Scream & Shout karena Spears juga melakukan banyak “rapping” di sini, sementara beat yang catchy mengundang perhatian yang penuh.
Secara struktur, Work Bitch memang lebih mengandalkan dentuman house dimana lirik dipaparkan dalam bentuk rap tadi, atau menuurut beberapa sumber, spoken lyric. Oleh karenanya, kita nyaris tidak bisa mengharapkan Spears bernyanyi dengan lebih melodik, apalagi pamer kekuatan vokal.
Syukurlah di bagian verse, dan terutama bridge, Work Bitch masih memberi ruang bagi Spears untuk bernyanyi dengan lebih tradisional. Namun, mengingat Work Bitch pada dasarnya lebih mengedepankan EDM, sehingga hal ini menjadi sekunder ketimbang musiknnya itu sendiri.
Ini menjadi masalah tersendiri bagi yang mengharapkan sebuah lagu bubblegum-pop yang easy listening. Oh ya, Work Bitch is catchy, akan tetapi tidak benar-benar akan menjadi anthem pop yang umum. Tapi, jika tugas Work Bitch sebagai mesin EDM, jelas ia sukses dalam misinya.
Jangan lewatkan pula video musiknya yang dikerjakan oleh Ben Mor yang sebelumnya juga mengerjakan Scream and Shout. Bagi yang merindukan tarian lincah dan enerjik ala Britney Spears, bisa menyaksikan kembali aksinya. Akan tetapi, kelebihan dari video musik ini justru adalah konsep yang diusungnya, dimana sensualitas terlihat begitu memenuhi atmosifrnya. Mengutip Mor, "(it) more of a theme ... rather than a narrative." Britney Spears as a dominatrix? You better see it. ASAP!
