I tell you, ketika sebuah brand sudah tercetak, konsistensi adalah harga mati untuk membuat kekuatan dari brand itu hadir. Sedikit melenceng malah akan membahayakan posisi brand. Jason DeRulo memiliki brand atas music dance-nya yang unik dan karyanya yang kerap menyampling lagu lawas dan populer. Untuk album terbarunya "Tattoo", tampaknya J hendak membahayakan brand tersebut untuk menggapai arah keunggulan keartisan, mungkin.
Ketika J bergoyang, dia bergoyang dengan segenap jiwa raga. Yang benar saja! Dia pernah cedera parah di tengah-tengah latihan untuk tur. Setelah sembuh, ia tidak berhenti untuk menghentak. Dedikasi. Tapi ketika ia menyanyikan balada, not so much. Ia tidak memiliki killer voice seperti ia memiliki killer move. 'Marry Me' sekali lagi ada bukti kesederhanaan vokalnya. Tidak stand out, melainkan stay put dibandingkan dengan vokalis negro lain seperti Usher, Ne-Yo, atau Chris Brown. Jadi, jika vokal adalah pendekatan yang hendak ia ciptakan disini, maka hal itu tergolong tidak sukses.
So, what did he try to achieve? I say, something personal. Sekarang ini, asmara dirinya dan Jordin Sparks sedang berbunga-bunga. 'Marry Me' yang dia gubah bersama Jonas Jeberg adalah surat cintanya pada Jordin. Ia menyebutnya sebagai lagu cinta upbeat. Disana terletak keistimewaannya. Dengan mendapatkan hal tersebut, single ini kemudian tak tampil sia-sia. I might sound like a hater here, the truth is 'Marry Me' is not as impressive as other tracks from J. It is simply simple, normal, standard, and not so artsy after all.
