Zaman sekarang adalah zamannya produksi dan reproduksi boyband. Belum bisa dikatakan sebagai kebangkitan pop era setara akhir 90-an dulu sih, tapi paling enggak ada pergerakan untuk mewujudkan hal tersebut. Union J masuk dalam barisan pergerakan ini. Setelah membuat ruang untuk hadir lewat single perdana mereka 'Carry You', kali ini giliran 'Beautiful Life' yang mendapat tongkat estafet untuk melanjutkan prestasi mereka sebagai artis rekaman.
Katakanlah single pertama mereka dulu tidak membuahkan sukses. Gagal menembus Top 5 di UK, perikatan dengan Kick-Ass 2 juga tidak berefek banyak. Tapi bagaimana jika ini melebihi ekspektasi yang diharapkan label kepada mereka. Tidak keluar sebagai pemenang jelas membuat mereka tidak menjadi prioritas. Semula yang dianggap kegagalan justru muncul sebagai keberhasilan, sehingga Union J mendapat kesempatan berikutnya untuk bicara lebih banyak pada dunia. Untuk itulah 'Beautiful Life' ini hadir. Digawangi oleh penulis lagu baru, Lilygreen & Maguire, 'BL' justru hadir dalam kualitas musik yang tidak rentan pada kritik. Intro akustik, chorus dengan band dan iring-iringan orkestra, memberikan dinamika yang apik. Lagu ini juga mengakomodir keempat cowok Union J untuk tampil brilian di urusan vokal. Kenyataan chorus hadir dengan lirik yang kuat dan tak sekedar pengulangan frase adalah komponen penting demi membentuk nilai sempurna untuk single ini.
Saya ingin mendengar banyak dari George dkk tentang musik mereka. Apa cerita di balik lagu yang mereka bawakan. Karena tampaknya mereka punya kisah personal yang terkait dalam lirik-lirik yang dinyanyikan, meskipun tidak terlibat secara langsung dalam penggubahan lagu-lagu tersebut. Bagaimana pandangan mereka mengenai sebuah gugahan dalam lagu ini, terkait dengan pengalaman yang mereka alami sendiri. Hingga akhirnya sebuah konsensus tercipta, bahwa hidup ini indah.
P.S.
Terdapat beberapa pandangan bahwa Union J adalah boyband overrated, padahal melihat sepak terjang mereka yang belum terlalu banyak sebenarnya mereka tergolong underrated. Jangan resistan dengan mereka. Give yourself some spin of 'Beautiful Life', then you can get a glimpse of a non-commercial sound with less ambition, but totally a worth-to-be-heard tune.
