Dalam perjalanan #MusicMondays yang Justin Bieber buat di penghujung tahun 2013 lalu, ‘Confident‘ ini adalah single pamungkasnya. Ia membungkus kesepuluh single yang Bieber rilis setiap Senin dalam sebuah kesimpulan yang erat kaitannya dengan pribadi Bieber. Di single ini, Bieber dibantu oleh Chance The Rapper dalam menampilkannya, serta didukung oleh Soundz yang membidangi produksinya. Mereka bukanlah pemain baru, tapi memang tidak banyak kesempatan yang menampilkan nama-nama Chance maupun Soundz di dunia populer.
Sulit melepaskan tuduhan Selena-centris untuk setiap karya Bieber. Termasuk yang satu ini. Ada bagian “Think she foreign, got passports//Mi amor started slow, go faster” yang memang menimbulkan praduga bahwa ini adalah Selena Gomez. It’s not rocket science, but it’s not a fact either. Tapi secara keseluruhan, ‘Confident’ yang awalnya ingin disampaikan sebagai sebuah pujian bagi seorang wanita tapi ternyata berubah menjadi sebuah pelecehan dengan lirik yang terkait dengan seks di bagian bridge: “She said it’s her first time//I think she might lied//Feels so good damn, and I don’t know why”
Bagaimana dengan verse yang Chance punya? Ia menambahi segala ciri psikis yang Bieber ungkapkan dengan ciri fisik yang ia beberkan dalam liriknya. Seolah berbuat sebagai side-kick, Chance mengiyakan segala yang ingin Bieber sampaikan.
Banyak yang menyukaikonsep video musik yang ditampilkan untuk single ini. Tayangan yang kian mendekatkan Bieber pada penampilan seksual dinilai cukup apik, lebih believable ketimbang drama Bieber sebelumnya. Kritik yang sudah berpihak padanya merupakan sebuah penebusan. Pencapaian yang Bieber buat dengan #MusicMondays maupun “Journals” memang tidak banyak, tapi paling tidak masih sanggup membuatnya sangkut di popularitas papan atas.
