Si Rachel Berry dari serial Glee berhasil menjadi orang berikutnya yang meluncurkan karirnya di luar serial musikal tersebut. Matthew Morrison, Mark Salling, dan Naya Rivera berhasil mendahului Lea Michele dalam urusan ini, tapi melihat apa label punya untuk menjadikan namanya happening, mereka patut khawatir kalau Lea bisa mengejar ketertinggalan. And she will, as she has just released her debut single, 'Cannonball'. Lagu pop semibalada yang sekali lagi memamerkan kebolehannya dalam mengolah vokal.

Columbia Records memberikan Lea kesempatan untuk bekerjasama dengan orang-orang terbaik di departemen musik dan lirik. Yang menanggungjawabi di kesempatan pertama ini adalah Sia Furler, Benny Blanco, dan Stargate. Merasa terkejut? Sama! Karena sama sekali tak ada jejak Sia maupun Stargate yang membekas di lagu ini. Sebelum mengetahui siapa mastermind-nya, Ryan Tedder adalah tebakan pertama. Gertakan drum dan struktur bagian pre-chorus dengan penggalan lirik yang dibawakan berulang-ulang mengatakan "Ryan Tedder was here!". But I got it wrong.

Seringnya membawakan lagu musikal, ataupun lagu lain dengan arahan serupa membuat 'Cannonball' terdengar refreshing. Tak seperti biasa, moment ini memang tepat untuk menawarkan penyegaran kepada penggemar sekaligus memisahkan Lea dari bayang-bayang Rachel. Lebih dari itu, ada sasaran komersil yang hendak ia tuju. Makanya, tak ada lagi tawar-menawar untuk pengadaan potensi easy listening, ear catchy, dan juga killer hook di single ini. Dan kalaupun lagu ini tidak berhasil di pasaran, paling tidak ia memberi efek kepada pendengar karena sangat mudah diingat.
