Lana Del Rey sepertinya sudah menjadi nama paten untuk sad core. Dan uniknya, berkat dirinya, sub-genre yang cenderung tersegmentasi ini ternyata bisa diterima dengan cukup luas. Menyusul kesuksesan album Born to Die, Del Rey pun akan menyusulnya dengan album Ultraviolence yang akan segera dirilis. Dan Del Rey menghadirkan West Coast sebagai single pertama
West Coast adalah apa yang tidak dan bisa kita harapkan dari Lana Del Rey. Tapi justru bukan berarti jelek. Sama sekali tidak. Lagu dibuka dengan gaya surf-rock yang menghentak. Fokus terutama pada ketukan drum yang bergaya vintage. Vokal Del Rey kemudian tampil ke depan, dengan sengau dan gaya bernyanyi yang mengingatkan akan Tori Amos. Tapi saat chorus merasuk, maka Lana Del Rey yang kita kenal, sentimen balada sad core yang menghanyutkan, pun seketika hadir. Perpaduan gaya baru dan lama ini sukses diantarkan dengan sangat menarik. Cantik sekaligus menggelisahkan.
Kekuatan West Coast dapat juga menjadi kelemahannya juga. Dengan perpindahan notasi yang cukup unik serta memiliki tone dan aspek atmosferik yang berbeda dalam satu baris, West Coast akan cenderung dianggap aneh karena membenturkan dua hal yang berbeda. Ini dapat menjadi kendala bagi pendengar awam untuk dapat mengapresiasi West Coast dengan lebih penuh.
Terlepas dari itu West Coast merupakan sebuah upaya inovasi yang sangat bernas dari seorang Lana Del Rey. Ia seolah tak mau terjebak oleh pola lama, namun juga tak menginginkan untuk menghianati ciri khasnya. Dengan materi seunik West Coast, rasanya menjadi sangat tidak sabar untuk segera dapat mendengarkan album Ultraviolence.
