Setelah menggerakkan seluruh tubuh mengumbar sensualitas lewat 'Can't Remember To Forget You', Shakira merilis 'Empire' sebagai single kedua dari album "Shakira." yang vibe-nya bertolak belakang dengan 'Can't Remember'. Skenario ini mengkondisikan Shakira pada standar yang ia tetapkan untuk menonjolkan berbagai aspek musikalitas yang ia miliki. Ini juga berguna sebagai bukti dinamika yang ia miliki dalam sebuah album.

Jika hanya Steve Mac dan Ina Wroldsen yang bekerja mem-backup single ini, hasilnya pasti berkubang pada konsep pop dasar yang tenang, radio friendly, dan less dramatic. Kecenderungan itu berubah menjadi ajang "pulang kampung" saat Shakira yang ikut serta memproduseri single ini dengan menginfus rock ke dalam arena. Ta-da!!! Saya tak menyalahkan pendengar jika merasa single ini kurang pesona, daya tarik untuk membuatnya menjadi terfavorit. Lagu setipe yang Shakira keluarkan memang berakhir pada kenyataan less enthusiastic dibanding rilisannya yang "menggoyang". 'Underneath Your Clothes' dan 'Don't Bother' mendapat respon tak semeriah 'Whenever, Wherever' atau 'Hips Don't Lie'. So, sedikitpun tidak mengejutkan kalau 'Empire' jatuh terbengkalai tak berdaya melawan pesona 'Can't Remember' yang sebelumnya tampil cukup menggemparkan. Meskipun demikian, ada jaminan kalau pendengar bisa menikmati kejernihan suara Shakira dalam moment senyap di bagian bridge lagu ini. And that's very something.
