Dalam 20 tahun rentang karirnya, Usher termasuk salah satu musisi yang cukup cerdik dalam menyikapi pasar dalam upaya mempertahankan eksistensinya. Beberapa tahun terakhir ini memang ia terdengar lebih nge-pop dibandingkan awal karirnya. Meski begitu, tampaknya ia kembali ke akar musikalitasnya dengan single paling barunya, Good Kisser, yang merupakan bagian dari album ke delapannya yang tengah dalam pengerjaan.
Ditulis oleh Usher bersama dengan Andrew Wansel, Ronald Colson, Jameel Roberts, Terry Sneed dan Warren Felder, Usher tampaknya kembali lagi ke ranah RnB dengan Good Kisser. Memadukan antara RnB, Soul dan Funk. Good Kisser memang terdengar lebih Urban, meski mengeksplorasi juga ranah Pop dari dekade 60-an. Hasilnya cukup meriah, dengan Usher yang bernyanyi dengan berpindah-pindah warna, mulai dari slengean, sensual hingga tipikal Usher yang kita kenal.
Gaya bernyanyi Usher ala-ala Michael Jackson terkadang masih terdengar. Namun dibanyak kesempatan, Usher juga terdengar mengadaptasi gaya bernyanyi seperti James Brown misalnya. Ini tidak mengherankan mengingat Good Kisser juga mengusung semangat funk yang cukup tebal. Perpindahan gaya bermusik dan bernyanyi ini uniknya tidak terdengar mengganggu, karena aransamen latar tetap berada konsisten dalam tone yang sama.
Good Kisser memang terdengar lebih "tersegmentasi" ketimbang nomor-nomor pop yang Usher biasa bawakan. Tapi dengan single ini setidaknya Usher membuktikan jika ia tetap ingin terdengar sebagai musisi dengan cita rasa artistik yang kuat. Upaya yang patut dipuji. Apakah ini nantinya akan menjadi pertanda warna yang akan mengisi album barunya? Kita lihat saja nanti.
