Menyusul sukses Shake It Off, Taylor Swift merilis Blank Space sebagai single kedua dari 1989. Lagi-lagi ia mengandalkan kreasi Max Martin dan Shellback sebagai single utama. Memang keduanya memiliki tangan dingin dalam musik pop, hingga tidak heran jika Swift kembali memercayakan kreasi mereka sebagai single andalannya. Lagi pula, siapa lagi yang bisa membantu Swift dalam membentuk imej Pop murni yang sedang dibentuknya jika bukan para pakar Pop itu sendiri.
Jika kita mencermati liriknya, memang ada sedikit kemiripan antara Shake It Off dengan Blank Space, yaitu semangat autobiografi kehidupan percintaan Taylor Swift yang dikenal sebagai serial lover. Tapi, berbeda dengan single pertama album 1989 tersebut, kali ini dalam Blank Space, Swift bersama Martin dan Shellback menghadirkan pop yang lebih melankolis, tapi tetap catchy sebagaimana biasanya. Percayalah, setelah dengar, Blank Space akan sulit dienyahkan dari benak. Ia akan terus berputar-putar di sana, enggan untuk keluar.
Perbedaan lainnya adalah semangat sarkasme dan sindiran yang lebih tebal dalam Blank Space. Uniknya, alih-alih menyindir orang lain, ia justru mengusung persepsi awam akan dirinya sebagai serial lover alias senang gonta-ganti pacar sebagai tematis lagu. Swift terlihat sangat menikmati lagunya saat menyanyikan lirik seperti, "Oh my God, look at that face / You look like my next mistake / Love's a game, want to play?"
Bermain-main dengan persepi umum, terlepas apakah benar atau tidak, menjadi kekuatan lain dari Blank Space. Lagu bisa jadi memaparkan sisi "player" seorang Taylor Swift, namun di sisi lain ia seperti mengolok-olok "korbannya", dan juga kalangan masyarakat yang sepertinya senang menjadikan dirinya sebagai bahan gosip.
Tidak cukup hanya berbentuk lirik, Swift bahkan memvisualkan dirinya sebagai "villain" dalam musik videonya. Dikerjakan oleh sutradara musik kenamaan, Joseph Kahn, Swift diperlihatkan sebagai sosok manis pada awalnya, hingga kemudian berubah menjadi garang dan bringasan, melalui berbagai prilaku destruktif kepada sang kekasih, yang diperankan oleh model tampan, Sean O'Pry.
Jadi, sudah syahkah Taylor Swift menjadi seorang musisi yang juara dan brilian? Rasa-rasanya jalan menuju ke situ sudah tepat dan mendekati. Blank Space merupakan "kendaraan" yang tepat untuk itu.
