Menyusul kesuksesan duetnya dengan Ariana Grande dalam 'Love Me Harder', The Weeknd melanjutkan eksistensinya dengan merilis single 'Earned It'. Tapi ini single istimewa, karena merupakan single promosi untuk film "Fifty Shades of Grey". Untuk informasi, film diangkat dari novel laris berjudul sama yang berkisah tentang romansa berbau S&M yang sensual dan kinky.
Sebagian besar dari kita mungkin tahu kalau sentra utama dari "Fifty Shades of Grey" adalah...seks. Jadi, apakah The Weeknd menuangkan keseksian dalam lagu 'Earned It' ini? Sebenarnya tidak ada kesan sensual, seksi atau apalah saat mendengarkan The Weekend menyanyikan lagu ini, karena penyanyi asal Kanada ini lebih dikenal dengan mengandalkan subtilitas dalam lagu maupun nyanyiannya.
Dan memang 'Earned It' masih mengandalkan subtilitas tadi. Ia adalah sebuah pop RnB yang mengedepankan emosi yang dibangun oleh vokal The Weeknd serta aransemen yang menggugah. Menggugah dalam artian di sini terkesan megah dan sinematis. Tipikal sebuah lagu tema film.
Berbeda dengan lirik lagu yang terasa "tulus" dan "naif", justru video musiknya ditampilkan dengan secara berbeda. Mengusung konsep BSDM, video dibintangi oleh pemain filmnya, Dakota Johnson, dan disutradarai langsung oleh sutradara filmnya, Sam Taylor-Johnson. Nuansa "panas" yang cukup eksplisit, untuk ukuran video musik, seakan menjadi teaser untuk filmnya nanti.
