John Legend sepertinya memang senang mengisi soundtrack sebuah film ya. Kali ini ia membawakan sebuah lagu berjudul 'Glory', yang merupakan lagu tema dari film berjudul "Selma" yang berkisah tentang Martin Luther King, Jr. Legend tidak sendiri di lagu ini karena ia juga dibantu oleh rapper Common yang sekarang lebih sering bermain film.
Berhubung "Selma" merupakan film inspiratif, dan menjadi nomine Film Terbaik OScar pula di tahun ini, maka Common dan John Legend tidak menghadirkan lagunya menjadi sebuah lagu hip-hop, melainkan sebuah balada penuh semangat dan antemik yang menggugah. Sesuai dengan aspek tematis filmnya tentu saja.
Tujuan 'Glory' adalah membangun semangat anthem dan megah, dan tugas itu tidak hanya dibangun oleh vokal Legend, yang seperti biasa, bisa diandalkan dalam hal ini. Kemegahan lagu juga dibangun melalui aransemen yang mengandung melodi yang mendukung untuk itu, melodramatis dan menggugah. Dan tugas musik latar adalah membungkus lagunya, agar kesan megah tadi bisa tersampirkan.
Baik Legend dan Common menjalankan tugas mereka dengan baik, terutama Legend yang terdengar sangat menghahati, sehingga esensi lagunya bisa tesampaikan dengan dengan baik. Tidak heran jika kita, pendengarnya, merasa larut dan tergugah oleh semangatnya.
Karena lagu yang ditulis oleh John Stephens, Lonnie Lynn, dan Che Smith ini memang memiliki kualitas yang tidak main-main, tidak heran jika lagu ini pun menyabet penghargaan dimana-mana. Setelah memenangkan "Best Original Song" di Golden Globes di awal tahun ini, lagi-lagi 'Glory' menyabet kemenangan di Oscar yang berlangsung kemarin. Selamat. Well deserved!
