Hoodie Allen mungkin bisa menjadi contoh, dimana seorang rapper Amerika Serikat non-kulit hitam yang sukses berkat usahanya sendiri. Setelah barisan mixtape dan juga EP yang dirilis secara mandiri, akhirnya ia bisa merilis album debutnya, "People Keep Talking" tahun lalu dan lumayan sukses di pasaran. Salah satu single milik Hoodie yang terdapat dalam album itu adalah 'All About It' dan istimewanya ia dibantu oleh penyanyi Inggris yang tengah naik daun, Ed Sheeran.
Basically, Hooodie's rap is more like a singtalk. Jadi masih terdengar seperti bernyanyi ketimbang nge-rap yang konvensional. Dan itu yang mungkin menyebabkan ia mengajak Ed Sheeran untuk membantunya mengerjakan single ini. Singtalk tentunya bukan hal yang aneh lagi, dan gaya tersebutlah yang bisa kita simak saat menyimak Sheeran di dalam 'All About It'.
Pengaruh pop ala Sheeran jelas mendominasi, dan mempengaruhi gaya bernyanyi (ok, rap) dari Allen. Masalahnya singtalk ala Sheeran masih mengingatkan akan Jason Mraz, yang laidback, slengean, tapi tetap terdengar harmonis. Well, memang Sheeran (masih) carbon copy Mraz sih, jadi tidak heran juga.
Tapi kolaborasi ini cukup asyik untuk disimak kok. 'All About It' mengandalkan sisi laidback tadi di tengah degup ritmisnya. Jadi tidak terlalu serius/gelap sebagaimana lagu rap lainnya. Bermain-main dengan lirik yang tidak kalah laidback dan cenderung nakal (baca: too self conscious).
Konsep ini diterjemahkan pula dalam video musiknya. Di antaranya Allen dan Sheeran memakai kostum ala superhero, Hallen yang berlari di atas treadmill, dan memakai pakaian astronot. Menerjemahkan esensi lagunya dengan cukup baik.
