Ketika Zayn Malik meninggalkan One Direction pada tahun 2015 dan merilis album solonya Mind of Mine setahun setelahnya, musik Zayn berubah dari pop ke synth R&B. Tak heran jika hal itu juga terjadi pada sisa personil yang lain ketika memilih jalur solo mereka, termasuk Harry Styles.
Rumor bahwa Harry Styles akan melanjutkan karinya sebagai solois sebenarnya sudah terdengar sejak 2015, setelah One Direction memutuskan untuk hiatus. Namun, yang membuat saya kaget ketika pertama kali mendengar single debut solonya yang berjudul ‘Sign of The Times’ bukanlah karena itu, melainkan karena genre musik yang diusungnya.
Belakangan ini, materi One Direction memang sedikit banyak terinpirasi dari british rock (dengarkan 3 album terakhir mereka jika Anda tidak tahu maksud saya). Tapi dalam single ‘Sign of The Times’, Harry Styles jelas mengusung kelas berbeda. Lagu berdurasi 6 menit ini seakan mendeklarasikan dirinya kepada publik sebagai 'The Next David Bowie'.
Harry Styles pertama kali mengumumkan peluncurkan 'Sign of The Times' bertepatan dengan ulang tahun ke-30 dari album Prince “Sign o’ The Times’ sebagai salah satu bentuk penghormatan kepada legenda tersebut. Meskipun kesamaan kedua materi tersebut hanya muncul pada nama, tidak secara musikalitas. Harry, dalam Sign of The Times malah lebih banyak terinspirasi musik 70's dari David Bowie yang “dioplos” dengan Elton John.
Dalam lagu ini, Harry membangun mood secara perlahan. Pertama piano, kemudian vokal lirih, lalu fill in rock drum a la Queen, dan isian gitar yang mencuri-curi di sela-sela lagu; semuanya dijejalkan dalam durasi 6 menit yang tak terlupakan. ‘Sign of The Times’ sendiri bercerita tentang bagaimana menghindari perasaan atau emosi di masa-masa sulit. “Just stop your crying, have the time of your life”, salah satu penggalan lirik itu seakan ditulis untuk menghibur para penggemar fanatik yang akan segera menangis histeris ketika mendengar suaranya.
Harry Styles jelas menikmati rolenya saat ini sebagai penyanyi solo, seketika bebas menciptakan musik otentik yang sesuai dengan idealismenya, sekaligus membuktikan bahwa dirinya bukan sekelas penyanyi pensiunan boyband yang hanya jual tampang. Di salah satu interview, Harry menjelaskan bahwa lagu 'Sign of The Times' merupakan lagu yang paling membanggakan yang pernah ia tulis. Saya pun turut bangga. Good job, Harry!
