Lagu ini merupakan karya Joe Kirkland dan Jason Dean yang sendirinya merupakan band penampil dengan aliran musik poprock, sementara proses produksinya dibantu oleh Jason Halbert, nama yang enggak asing bagi Kelly karena ia pernah dipercaya untuk menggodok album paling cadas dalam karinya, "My December".
Itu mengapa Kelly langsung mengiyakan ajakan duet di lagu ini. Ia tak perlu repot untuk mencocokkan diri di dalamnya, karena secara alami lagu ini pas dengan gaya sang idola. "Lyrically and musically, it is right up my alley," akunya. Sementara pembagian porsi antara Ben dan Kelly selanjutnya dinilai sebagai pemberi perspektif baru terhadap lagu yang aslinya ditulis sebagai lagu solo ini. Sebagai juara dari ajang pencarian bakat menyanyi, tak ada cela lagu di segi vokal. Bahkan saat bersenandung secara bersama, kedua vokalis yang masing-masing kuat karakternya ini menemukan keharmonisannya di teknik pecah suara.
Tapi membaca barisan liriknya, lagu ini tergolong yang miskin kata-kata. Bayangkan saja, apa yang dinyanyikan oleh Ben di verse-nya digunakan ulang untuk bagian Kelly. Selain itu, masih ada bagian bridge yang dibangun ulang dari kata-kata di chorus.
Belum lama dari sini, jebolan The X Factor UK lainnya, Olly Murs pernah menggelar duet dengan vokalis wanita asal Amerika lain, Demi Lovato dalam lagu 'Up'. Format keduanya hampir sama, sehingga siapapun yang menyatakan suka pada 'Up', pasti gampang untuk menyukai 'Second Hand Heart' ini. Dua-duanya sama enak!
