Meskipun hysteria penggemar Westlife tidak seheboh dulu, boyband asal Irlandia yang beranggotakan Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Nicky Byrne, dan Shane Filan ini tetap menjadi salah satu grup musik yang melekat di hati dan telinga kalangan masyarakat dengan usia yang beragam, mulai dari remaja sampai dewasa. Boyband yang telah mengumumkan akan bubar setelah Greatest Hits/Farewell Tour mereka tahun 2012 mendatang ini akan merilis album Greatest Hits kedua mereka bulan November 2011.
Single pertama dari album ini, “Lighthouse”, ditulis oleh Gary Barlow yang merupakan salah satu vokalis boyband asal Inggris Take That dan penulis lagu, serta John Shanks yang merupakan produser yang telah memenangkan Grammy Award dan telah berkolaborasi dengan Kelly Clarkson, Backstreet Boys, dll.
“Lighthouse”, yang dirilis 19 November, adalah single terakhir Westlife serta single ke-31 dari keseluruhan single yang pernah mereka rilis selama karir mereka sejak tahun 1998. Lagu romantis ini dibuka dengan alunan piano yang sedikit mengingatkan kita dengan Elton John, setelah itu formula dalam sejumlah single Westlife yang sebelumnya masih berlaku sampai single terakhir ini: Shane Filan menyanyikan verse pertama dan refrain pertama, lalu Mark Feehily menyanyikan verse kedua dan refrain kedua.
Sejak lagu dimulai, ciri khas musik Gary Barlow/Take That terdengar kental, sehingga lagu ini terdengar agak mirip dengan lagu Take That. Namun vokal Westlife yang sudah akrab dan piawai dalam menyanyikan balada-balada romantis menjadikan lagu ini terdengar ‘sangat Westlife’. Piano dan strings mendominasi iringan alat musik dalam lagu ini.
Hal yang patut mendapat perhatian adalah bagian bridge lagu ini yang terdengar sangat berbeda dan sedikit lebih memiliki power daripada bagian lain dari lagu ini. Pergantian dari refrain menuju bridge lalu kembali ke refrain yang mulus menjadikan bridge tersebut selingan yang indah dalam lagu ini.
Music video untuk single ini di-shoot di Afrika Selatan bulan September lalu, ketika mereka memulai Gravity Tour untuk kawasan Afrika Selatan dan Asia. Di music video tersebut, keempat personil Westlife menyanyikan lagu ini di alam terbuka Afrika pada siang hari dan setting waktu berubah menjadi malam hari ketika masuk ke refrain terakhir.
Pendirian Westlife untuk tetap mengusung musik pop ballad romantis yang menjadi ciri khas mereka selama karirnya patut mendapat pujian, karena dalam genre itu mereka benar-benar bersinar dan menjadi diri sendiri tanpa terpengaruh tren lain yang sedang berlangsung. “Lighthouse” adalah single yang layak untuk mengantar kepergian mereka sebagai boyband yang menyanyikan lagu pop ballad bertema cinta sejak awal sampai akhir karir mereka, dan mereka hebat dalam melakukan hal tersebut.
