Battle Scars hadir pada pertengahan Agustus lalu sebagai hasil dari kolaborasi Guy Sebastian dengan Lupe Fiasco. Sebuah kolaborasi yang unik mengingat kedua penyanyi ini adalah musisi dengan aliran yang berbeda—Sebastian pada R&B dan Fiasco pada hip hop. Maka, tak heran jika di minggu awal peluncurannya single ini sudah mampu menarik perhatian khalayak dunia.
Lagu yang ditulis oleh Sebastian bersama David Ryan Harris dan Fiasco pada rapnya ini dibuka dengan hook yang begitu catchy. Kombinasi antara ‘these battle scars’ yang dinyanyikan dengan nada yang panjang, yang kemudian dilanjutkan dengan ‘don’t look like they’re fading/don’t look like they’re ever going away’ dengan nada cepat membuat bagian hook terdengar lebih dinamis. Hal lain yang menarik dari single ini adalah alur lagunya yang naik turun di masing-masing bagian keduanya. Melalui lagu ini, kedua musisi tersebut mencoba menyampaikan isu tentang ‘melawan’ luka itu dengan kuat dan tegar serta melanjutkan hidup ke arah yang lebih baik.Walau memiliki lirik yang terkesan begitu mellow, lagu ini jauh dari anggapan menye-menye—untunglah vokal Sebastian terdengar begitu kuat sehingga imej dirinya yang lembut itu tidak terdapat disini.
Berbeda dari lagu pop-hip hop kebanyakan, dimana bagian rap terkadang memiliki lirik yang agak berbeda dengan isi lagunya, bagian rap Fiasco disini saling menguatkan dengan bagian Sebastian—sehingga kedua bagian tersebut terdengar berkesinambungan. Hal ini jelas, membuktikan bahwa kerjasama mereka ini bukan kerjasama biasa, karena mereka dapat menyatukan visi dan misi dalam bermusik serta menuangkannya menjadi karya dengan makna yang lebih dalam dan berbobot.
Meski begitu, lagu ini bukanlah lagu yang bisa kamu dengar berulang kali karena pada akhirnya telinga akan cepat bosan dibuatnya. Tetapi, untuk lagu dengan dua musisi kondang di dalamnya juga berisi tema yang tidak murahan, lagu ini tentu sangat menarik untuk disimak. Jadi, tunggu apa lagi?
