Untuk urusan lagu pop, rock, dan campuran ballad dengan lirik yang menyayat, The Script jelas sudah piawai dalam hal ini. Band yang digawangi oleh tiga personel asal Irlandia ini kembali dengan single kedua mereka dalam album terbarunya, #3, yang berjudul Six Degrees of Separation. Lagu ini dikemas dalam format yang sayangnya, tidak begitu banya kmenawarkan sesuatu yang berbeda jika dibandingkan dengan kesuksesan single terdahulu yang juga berasal dari album yang sama, Hall of Fame.
Six Degress of Separation sendiri dibuka dengan vokal O’Donoghue dan permainan gitar serta dentingan piano yang menghanyutkan. Bait kedua, dentuman drum dan nada yang menghentak mulai memasuki lagu, dilanjutkan dengan chorusnya yang powerful. Terinspirasi dari pengalaman pahit tentang hubungannya dengan seorang model mungkin jugalah yang membuat lagu ini terasa dinyanyikan dari hati sekali oleh sang vokalis. Liriknya jug amerupakan bagian yang menarik untuk disimak, bercerita tentang usaha yang dilakukan oleh seseorang yang patah hati. Meski sekeras apa pun usaha sang tokoh untuk menghilangkan kenangan akan mantannya, namun tetap saja untuk menyembuhkan hati yang patah membutuhkanwaktu yang tak bisa ia kira.
Sebenarnya tidak ada yang mengecewakan jika berbicara tentang musikalitas mereka—dari suara O’Donoghue yang sangat bold dan nge-rock hingga permainan gitar juga drum dari Sheehan serta Joseph Power yang harmonis dan cocok untuk membawakan lagu mellow tanpa kesan menye dan masihterbilang manly. Six Degrees of Separation memang enak didengar, terutama tentu, bagi siapa saja yang mengalami nasib yang hampir serupa dengan lirik yang tergambarkan. Namun tetap saja, tidak ada kejutan yang akan membuat kita merasa ‘wah’ dengan lagu ini. Rasanya mereka seperti bermain aman dengan format pop-rock yang ada. Semoga saja, single-single seterusnya dari album ini akan lebih membawa nuansa dan warna baru bagi para penggemar setia dan terbarunya!
