Nama Lady Gaga memang tidak bisa lepas dari ekpektasi tinggi. Saat ia mengabarkan akan merilis ARTPOP, album ketiganya, jelas banyak yang menyambut dengan antusias. Kehadiran single pertama untuk album tersebut Applause seolah menjadi penanda jika Lady Gaga selalu punya senjata agar musiknya selalu digemari.
Ditulis dan diproduseri oleh Lady Gaga bersama DJ White Shadow dan sesuai dengan konsep ARTPOP, dalam Applause, Gaga menghadirkan semangat artistik sekaligus pop yang membesarkan namanya. Gaga seolah kembali ke pendekatan elektro-pop yang membesarkan namanya di era The Fame namun sekaligus memeluk sentuhan kekinian.
Ada yang menyebutkan terdengar seperi perpaduan antara David Bowie dengan Annie Lennox, bahkan ada yang kembali melekatkan nama Madonna, namun Applause sekali lagi menunjukkan kekuatan Gaga dalam mempersembahkan pop catchy yang memorable.
Applause bisa disebutkan sebagai sebuah lagu bertipe grower, dimana perlu berulang kali didengar untuk benar-benar jatuh cinta kepadanya. Meski menghadirkan chorus yang berteriak dengan sangat catchy dan ringan, namun bagian verse disusun berdasarkan notasi yang cenderung agak kompleks.
Kekuatan Gaga lain terdapat dalam lirik. Meski ada yang beranggapan terlalu pretensius, namun barisan kalimat seperti I've overheard your theory "nostalgia's for geeks" / I guess sir, if you say so, some of us just like to read atau kalimat pembuka lagu I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong / To crash the critic saying, "Is it right or is it wrong?", jelas menunjukkan jika pop yang diusung oleh Gaga bukan melulu sebuah permen karet yang hilang lezatnya setelah manis menghilang.
Selalu ada sesuatu yang ingin diceritakan Gaga dalam barisan liriknya, meski tak melulu harus sebuah kritik sosial. Dalam konsep eksistensialisme atau pun narsisme yang semakin mewabah, entah mengapa lirik Applause serasa pas dalam menangkap fenomena tersebut.
Applause mungkin memang bukan sebuah masterpiece, but I still think it would be a Gaga's classic. Akan tetapi jelas kita tidak bisa menafikan jika Applause merupakan salah satu lagu pop terbaik saat ini: catchy, easy listening and anthemic.
So yeah, let's scream it, "I live for the applause-plause"
