Alrighty. "Midnight Memories", album studio ketiga One Direction sudah dekat perilisannya. Single terbaru yang dirilis dari album ini adalah 'Story Of My Life' yang tampak mulai menampakkan kedewasaan musik dari lima pemuda asal UK ini. John Ryan, Julian Bunetta, berikut Jamie Scott membantu Zayn cs dalam mewujudkan kesan kedewasaan tadi, sejenak menjinakkan kebiasaan upbeat 1D.
Lagu model demikian, pop beraroma folk yang juga terpengaruh oleh sedikit rock dan masih terdefinisi dalam ranah alternatif lumayan populer saat ini. Didapati dari nama-nama besar seperti Mumford & Sons maupun Ed Sheeran, radio tak lagi menganaktirikan tune yang tergolong non-mainstream ini. Besar harapan setelah 1D mulai menggarap musik serupa, maka berikutnya musik spesifik tersebut akan menembus level trend yang lebih tinggi.
Dari segi lirik, 'Story' juga tak kalah menyedot perhatian. Ia mengangkat kisah romansa yang gagal dengan gaya tulisan yang cukup kelam. Resapi bagian pre-chorus yang menurut saya adalah bagian yang paling menguras emosi dari keseluruhan lagu.

Atas dasar percobaan keluar dari zona nyaman, lagu berdurasi 4 menit 5 detik ini layak dicap sukses. Ia mampu menyempil dalam persaingan rilisan single yang ketat, mewarisi kekuatan yang mengalir dalam rilisan-rilisan 1D terdahulu. Tapi sebenarnya lebih dari itu, tujuan yang dipatok untuk 'Story' adalah menekankan pada publik bahwa mereka tak lagi melakukan eksploitasi terhadap satu warna musik, dan masih bisa menggenggam sukses dengan warna musik yang bervariasi.
