Hey Brother merupakan single ketiga Avicii untuk album debutnya, True. Ditulis oleh Avicii bersama Ash Pournouri, Salem Al Fakir dan Vincent Pontare, Hey Brother ini masih mengikuti trend folk-influenced song yang tengah berkembang saat ini dan juga menyusul single pertama album ini, Wake Me Up.
Kehadiran anggota band pengusung bluegrass, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Dan Tyminski, sebagai pengisi vokal, mempertegas imbuhan folk yang diusung oleh Avicii dalam hey Brother.
Jika tidak terlalu familiar dengan musik Avicii, awalnya akan mengira Hey Brother sebagai lagu folk murni, karena lagu dibuka dengan vokal Dan Tyminski yang mendominasi serta aransemen musik yang mengandalkan instrumen yang lebih organis ketimbang elektronika.
Barulah memasuki bridge, elemen EDM perlahan mulai masuk, yang terutama diindikasikan dengan kehadiran drum-machine. Lagu menemukan momentum EDM tentu saja di bagian chorus disaat peran Avicii sebagai master-mind lagunya sekaligus seorang DJ lebih berperan.
Di bagian ini Hey Brother lebih mengedepankan beat-beat ritmis yang disusun berdasarkan melodi yang tujuannya tentu saja mengajak pendengar untuk bergoyang. Meski begitu, bagian folknya tidak terasa sebagai gimmick belaka, melainkan sebagai sebuah pengantar menuju bentuk yang sebenarnya dari lagu ini, progressive house.
To sum it up, Hey Brother masih menunjukkan kemampuan Avicii dalam meramu progressive house yang berbalut folk yang sedap didengar.
