Maroon 5 adalah salah satu band pop papan atas yang sempat sedikit meredup namanya namun berhasil kembali meraih kesuksesan melalui single-single seperti Moves Like Jagger, Payphone dan One More Night. Setelah kurang lebih 2 tahun, pada tahun 2014 ini Maroon 5 mengumumkan bahwa mereka akan segera merelease album kelima mereka yang simply diberi judul ‘V’ dan sebagai single andalan mereka merelease sebuah lagu berjudul ‘Maps’ pada 16 Juni lalu. Seperti apa single ‘Maps’ ini? Apakah bernuansa pop sama dengan single-single terakhir Maroon 5 atau Maroon 5 kembali dengan sound yang sedikit funk dan rock seperti di awal-awal kemunculan mereka? Mari kita simak bersama-sama.
Melihat lebih jauh ke dalam lagu berdurasi 3:10 ini, ‘Maps’ ditulis oleh Adam Levine dengan bantuan dari Ryan Tedder serta diproduseri oleh Benny Blanco. Melihat nama-nama dibelakang single ini, mereka adalah orang-orang yang bertanggung jawab atas kesuksesan single ‘Moves Like Jagger’ dan ‘Payphone’ sehingga ekspektasi untuk lagu ini adalah sebuah lagu bernuansa pop tidaklah salah. Lagu ini langsung dibuka oleh suara khas Adam Levine yang bernyanyi dengan diiringi petikan electric guitar. Build up dari lagu ini bisa kita rasakan ketika lagu memasuki pre-chorus dan ketika lagu memasuki chorus kita bisa merasakan musik yang lebih powerful dibandingkan verse. Lyric dari lagu ini masih berputar sekitar masalah cinta, dimana secara garis besar lagu ini menceritakan masalah cinta yang hilang.
Secara keseluruhan, Maroon 5 tampaknya ingin mengulang kesuksesan album ‘Overexposed’ atau setidaknya mengulang kesuksesan single ‘Payphone’ dan itu bukanlah hal yang buruk melihat luar biasa suksesnya single ‘Payphone’. Music video untuk lagu ini juga sudah direlease dan konsep music videonya cukup fresh dengan menggunakan alur flashback. Cerita dari music videonya terinspirasi oleh sebuah film dari Christopher Nolan yang berjudul ‘Memento’ so when you watch this music video, you gotta ‘maps’ the story line.
