Fase pertama adalah fase dimana Ed Sheeran mempopulerkan diri dengan lagu-lagu heartfelt nan emosional dalam keluarga balada. Fase selanjutnya berkembang pada pesona lain yang bisa membuka telinga pendengar terhadap musik Ed yang dinamis. 'Don't', single kedua dari album kedua Ed, "x" memang masih diterjemahkan sebagai sebuah lagu pop rock, blue-eyed soul. Yang membuatnya berbeda adalah tempo yang meningkat. Tidak setinggi 'Sing', tapi tak selembut 'Lego House'.

Kualitas the-in-between yang dianut 'Don't' merupakan keuntungan. Sebagai pelumas yang memuluskan jalan ke telinga pendengar sekaligus obat anti bosan yang menggerakkan rantai dalam dinamika musik Ed. Lagu berlirik rapat dan penuh ini ternyata berkisah mengenai pengkhianatan, menggunting dalam lipatan. Agak ragu untuk menemukan posisi tepatnya lewat latar musik? Well, lagu ini juga tidak sepenuhnya mengenai perasaan, tapi lebih pada deskripsi situasi.

Yang menarik dalam single ini adalah keterlibatan Benny Blanco dan Rick Rubin. Aha! Surprising, isn't it?! Awalnya mungkin berfikir bahwa akan ada kontras yang terjadi. Serius, ini bagaikan dua dunia yang bersinggungan. Dan takjubnya, karakter Benny dan Rick justru melunak, saling mendukung guna menguatkan pembinaan karakter Ed. Dan, 'Don't' jatuh-jatuhnya bukan sebagai lagu patah hati karena kegagalan cinta, tapi lebih pada penguatan diri. Karena, what doesn't kill you still makes you stronger.
