Dengan mengambil sampel Tom’s Diner milik Suzanne Vega, Fall Out Boy menghadirkan single terbaru mereka. Canturies, demikian judulnya. Lagu ini merupakan cita rasa pertama dari album keenam mereka. Sebagai single pertama, tentu ada alasan mengapa FOB memilih Centuries sebagai andalan. Lantas, apa kekuatan dari lagu ini?
Ditulis oleh Pete Wentz, Patrick Stump, Joe Trohman, Andy Hurley, Justin Tranter, Michael Fonseca dan Raja Kumari, Centuries terdengar begitu antemik dan bergelora dengan semangat self-empowerment yang kuat. Tidak hanya itu, single tetap mengedepankan melodi yang catchy agar ia mudah untuk disukai. Secara sederhana bisa dikatakan jika Centuries cukup berhasil dalam memadukan antara Pop dan Rock dengan porsi yang pas.
Rock yang selama ini menjadi kekuatan FOB tetap digali dengan penuh. Teriakan vokal Patrick Stump tetap terdengar prima sebagaimana biasa. Bahkannya sebagian besar waktunya di lagu ini dihabiskan dengan meneriakkan lagunya dengan intens. Drum yang menggebu dan distrosi gitar menjadi tandem. Tapi dengan hadirnya sampel Tom's Diner tadi, lagu juga terdengar catchy, tebal dengan nada-nada pop yang catchy.
Centuries masih menjadi bukti akan kekuatan FOB dalam menghadirkan Pop-Rock yang seru dan segar. Semangat anthemik dan unsur tematis tentang self-empowerment, Wentz mengandaikannya sebagai kisah David melawan Goliath, menjadi kelebihan tersendiri. Mungkin mereka masih mengukang formula musik yang sama, karena Centuries masih kental dengan ciri khas mereka, tapi setidaknya lagu ini masih menunaikan tugasnya dengan baik.
