Taylor Swift ternyata memilih 'Style' sebagai single ketiga untuk album larisnya, 1989. Ummm, apakah single ini berkisah tentang Harry Styles, personel One Direction, yang kabarnya pernah dipacarinya? Tergantung interprestasi pendengar. Yang pasti, ini adalah sebuah lagu yang mengemas synth-pop 80-an dengan bergaya.
Max Martin dan Shellback yang bertugas sebagai produser menghadirkan Taylor Swift dengan cukup pas sebagai seorang penampil pop 80-an, meski rasa-rasanya lagu lebih condong ke arah gaya M83 dalam versinya yang paling ringan.
Dan berbicara tentang M83, tentunya new wave-lah yang terlintas di benak. Maka, 'Style' juga terdengar mengemas new wave tadi dengan pekat, meski sekali lagi harus ditekankan pada kata ringan. Namun, bukan berarti lagu ini kehilangan tajinya. Swift tampaknya tahu benar bagaimana merangka sebuah lagu pop yang berkelas.
Sebagai lagu pop yang "berkelas", liriknya pun mengandalkan metafora ketimbang lugas bertutur. Dengan lirik seperti "You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye / And I got that red lip, classic thing that you like / And when we go crashing down, we come back every time / 'Cause we never go out of style, we never go out of style," apakah Swift mencoba untuk mengeksplorasi tentang konsep percintaan yang klasik dan retro? Bisa saja.
Video musiknya pun tak kalah istimewa. Disutradarai oleh Kyle Newman, video memperlihatkan cita rasa seni yang cukup tajam. Penggunaan siluet yang saling menimpali dengan atraktif adalah kekuatan videonya. Seolah-olah materi untuk sebuah pertunjukan video instalasi, video 'Style' bermain-main dengan gaya, tapi tak kehilangan esensi. Brilian!
