Sudah seharusnya Leona Lewis memulai bab baru musiknya dengan sesuatu yang antemik. Toby Gad, penulis lagu sekaligus produser pop yang banyak berkontribusi untuk artis dunia seperti Alicia Keys hingga Madonna ini untuk pertama kalinya tampil dalam karya Leona. 'Fire Under My Feet' adalah sebuah anthem yang pas untuk memulai gejolak di album studio terbaru Leona, album pertamanya di bawah payung Island, "I Am".

Ini sebenarnya agak menjauh dari pesona pop yang Leona biasa tampilkan. Sebelumnya ia kaya akan cita rasa komersil, tapi sekarang -paling tidak di single ini-, Leona lebih ingin memenangkan hati pendengar lewat musik. Corak musik lebih ia kedepankan, guna mengangkat citranya sebagai seorang penulis lagu mungkin. Eksplorasi vokal masih dalam koridor biasa, tapi pergolakan musik jauh berkelana dari wheelhouse-nya.

Tidak sedikit yang membandingkan karya terbaru Leona ini dengan hit perkasa Adele, 'Rolling in the Deep'. Di satu sisi akan melumat Leona di perkara originalitas. Tapi di sisi lain ini justru menegaskan kebolehannya yang semakin jadi sebagai penulis lagu. Jadi, satu poin

sudah tercapai, tinggal poin lain yang melibatkan penerimaan pendengar terhadap 'Fire Under My Feet'. Sejak dirilis pada 7 Juni lalu, single ini termasuk yang malas bergerak di chart. Lihat saja, di US ia belum berhasil menembus Hot 100 Billboard, dan di negaranya sendiri, single ini bahkan tidak menyentuh Top 40 di UK Singles Chart.

Ini lumayan buruk. Mengingat track record Leona yang sempat terombang-ambing tatkala hendak merilis album studio ketiganya, "Glassheart", bukan tak mungkin ia akan kembali tersandung dalam penyelesaian album studio terbarunya kelak. Tapi ingat saja, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Dan 'Fire Under My Feet' akan memberikan kekuatan tersebut bagi sang pemenang The X Factor ini.
