Kesan pertama saat mendengarkan ‘Good For You‘ dari Selena Gomez ini adalah: this doesn’t sound anything like her. Anything at all. Lagu ini terlalu ghetto untuk ukuran mantan Disney Princess tersebut. Ia menenggelamkan diri dalam pesona musik pop yang kuat terpengaruh pada R&B dan Hip-Hop. Tapi mengingat track record Selena yang sangat bagus dengan uji coba -dimana ‘Come & Get It’ dan aroma worldbeat-nya berhasil memberi puncak karir baru bagi sang artis- ‘Good For You’ ini pun punya masa depan yang cerah.
Peran utamanya dalam mengolah vokal sesuai kebutuhan lagu; agak me-raspy dengan tone down sepanjang durasi merupakan alasan utama kenapa lagu ini terdengar berbeda. Selena memang tak punya peran dalam penulisan lagu. Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Nick Monson, serta ASAP Rocky yang telah menggodoknya. Tapi ia terlibat dalam proses kreatif dimana menjalin keterikatan personal dengan imej diri yang mendewasa.
‘Good For You’ berkisah tentang afeksi yang mendalam. Bagaimana sebuah komitmen yang dilukiskan secara manis dan indah dalam untaian kata per katanya. Sesekali ada lirik nakal di bagian ASAP yang membuat lagu ini berkesan seductive:

Keseluruhan bagian rap dihilangkan dalam video musiknya, sehingga presentase audiovisual terhadap single ini ditampilkan polos oleh Selena saja. Apakah mengurangi makna lagu? Tidak. Eliminasi tersebut hanya menghilangkan satu point of view dan menghapus jejak interaktif dua pihak pelakon dalam lagu. Selebihnya, smooth talk sexy walk sebagai produk perdana Selena bersama Interscope.
