Era ini tak hanya dikenal sebagai era dance generic, tapi juga era grup vokal; boyband dan girlband. Kerap bermunculan nama baru dengan formasi 3, 4, 5 atau bahkan lebih orang untuk mencoba peruntungan di dunia musik. The Collective adalah satu dari sekian banyak nama baru tadi. Mereka terbentuk dalam ajang The X Factor Australia setelah tiap-tiapnya gagal berkompetisi sebagai solois. Jayden Sierra, Julian De Vizio, Will Singe, Trent Bell, dan Zach Russell dikumpulkan untuk menjadi sebuah grup dan berhasil keluar sebagai juara 3. Kemudian mereka dikontrak oleh Sony Music untuk merilis rekaman. Yang dijadikan single debut mereka adalah 'Surrender'.
Tak asing dengan kisah perjalanan mereka di The X Factor? A little too One Direction, isn't it?! Dan ya, 1D juga yang diboyong oleh mentor mereka, Ronan Keating di babak home visits. Bukan cuma itu, karena pada kenyataannya, single 'Surrender' yang diciptakan oleh David Musumeci, Anthony Egizii, dan member The Collective, Will Singe ini terdengar begitu 'What Makes You Beautiful', 'One Thing', ataupun 'Live While We're Young'. Jangan salahkan mereka, karena setiap grup pop masa kini pasti ingin terdengar young dan fun seperti yang selalu dihadirkan oleh 1D. Setiap erangan gitar dan setiap beat drum menimbulkan efek dinamisme musik pop-dance-rock serupa.
Tapi ada penawaran yang berbeda disini. Will mengambil bagian bridge sebagai momen yang dimanfaatkan untuk menampilkan kebolehannya nge-rap. Artis lain mungkin akan menyerahkan bagian tersebut kepada artis rap untuk ditanggungjawabi, namun tidak untuk The Collective. Mereka justru menjual diri sendiri demi menunjukkan keberagaraman bakat yang mereka miliki.
"But girl you move like a butterfly, butterfly, then you sting like a bee" Tampaknya mereka telah terpesona dengan seorang girl next door yang fierce. Tak ada penggambaran spesifik mengenai si cewek dalam video musiknya. Mereka hanya have fun dengan kerumunan yang memadati pesta di sekeliling kolam renang.
The Collective sangat digemari. Ketika masih ada di X Factor saja, 8 dari 12 penampilan mereka berhasil masuk ke chart musik di Australia. Maka jangan heran mengetahui 'Surrender' secepat kilat mendapat sertifikat emas atas penjualannya. Mungkin apresiasi yang besar tersebut dapat dijadikan pertimbangan agar boyband ini bisa melepaslandaskan karir mereka ke luar Australia. Sekaligus memanfaatkan era ini.
