Boyband asal Britania-Irlandia, One Direction, merilis single pertama mereka “What Makes You Beautiful” dalam bentuk digital single pada tanggal 9 September 2011 melalui Syco Records. One Direction terdiri oleh Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles dan Zayn Malik. Tadinya, Niall, Liam, Louis, Harry dan Zayn mengikuti audisi The X Factor di United Kingdom, tetapi mereka gagal untuk masuk Boys category. Namun salah satu juri, Nicole Scherzinger mengusulkan agar mereka digabungkan dalam suatu band untuk Groups category, dan lahirlah One Direction.
“What Makes You Beautiful” ditulis oleh Carl Frank dan Rami Yacoub, makanya lagu ini tipikal dengan debut single Britney Spears “...Baby One More Time” yang sangat kental dengan bubblegum-pop, sedangkan Savan Kotecha kebagian untuk memproduseri lagu ini. Tempo yang diberikan adalah tipikal bubblegum-pop yang identik dengan para remaja. Ketika mendengarkan “What Makes You Beautiful” akan mengingatkan dengan pop murni pertengahan tahun 1990-an sampai awal 2000-an.
Selain dirilis dalam bentuk digital single, “What Makes You Beautiful” juga dirilis dalam bentuk CD single, yang dirilis oleh Syco Records pada tanggal 12 September 2011 di United Kingdom dan Irlandia. Sepertinya The Wanted akan memiliki saingan chart battle khususnya di United Kingdom. Deja vu? Mengingatkan seperti Westlife versus Five, Spice Girls versus All Saints atau seperti di United States pada saat Britney Spears versus Christina Aguilera. Pop battle adalah sesuatu yang sangat menarik dan sensasional, karena setiap pihak akan memiliki pendukung masing-masing.
Khabarnya, One Direction akan segera merilis album studio pertama mereka pada musim gugur mendatang, seperti apa ya albumnya? Semoga saja akan memberikan nuansa pop yang kental, seperti masa-masa dimana pop masih murni dan seksi, tidak terlalu banyak campuran electro dan trance seperti kebanyakan music disaat ini.
