Untuk musik Gym Class Heroes sendiri yang terdefinisi sebagai alternative hip-hop saja sudah terasa begitu bervariasi. Band yang lahir sejak akhir dekade 90-an tapi mulai rekaman di awal dekade 2000-an ini tidak memiliki keterbatasan dalam mencampuradukkan musik. Contohnya, mereka punya unsur pop dan reggae untuk mengkombinasikan musik dalam single ‘Ass Back Home‘ ini, yang adalah single kedua dari album “The Papercut Chronicles II”. Dalam single ini, Neon Hitch memegang kuasa dalam hook. Bukan formula baru sih menampilkan vokal cewek dalam lagu rap, tapi ya pasti ada hal yang berbeda yang ditawarkan setiap single berformula serupa muncul. Ya seringanya memang hook dikondisikan untuk diisi oleh vokal cewek, menyesuaikan pada apa yang dikisahkan di lagu.
Untuk ‘Ass Back Home’, kisah di dalamnya merupakan pandangan pria dan wanita tentang keadaan mereka yang terpisah oleh keadaan. Si cowok tengah bepergian dengan band-nya, sementara si cewek sepenuh hati berharap agar si cowok kembali, meskipun dirinya tak tau pasti kapan itu akan terjadi. Sound depressing, huh?! Kurang lebih memang begitu. Tampilan video dalam arahan sutradara Dugan O’Neal pun sempurna menggambarkan kegetiran masing-masing dalam melalui masa-masa sulit tersebut.
Yang agak kurang ngena dengan kesedihan yang terangkum dalam liriknya adalah musik yang sedikit dancy di bagian hook-nya. Mungkin disanalah Benny Blanco muncul dengan kebiasaannya yang memberi porsi dance beat dalam karya-karyanya. Tapi sebenarnya bagian ini pula yang berpotensi besar menjadi bagian terfavorit dari lagunya. Terlebih saat dance beat tersebut memuncak mendekati akhir lagu, bridge hingga outro. You decide, whether to have fun with the beat or emotionally involve with the lyrics.
