Seperti yang dijanjikan. di paruh kedua 2013, Justin Timberlake akan merilis bagian kedua dari album The 20/20 Experience. Direncanakan rilis di bulan September mendatang, Timberlake memberi pemanasan dengan merilis single perdana untuk album tersebut yang bertajuk Take Back the Night.
Dalam Take Back the Night, Timberlake menghadirkan melodi yang mengalir dengan smooth dengan penekanan pada kata "dance", meski secara tempo single ini berjalan dalam pergerakan medium ketimbang benar-benar up-tempo. Yang harus dicermati dance yang ditawarkan oleh Justin Timberlake bersama kolaborator penulisnya, Timbaland, Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon dan James Fauntleroy sama sekali jauh dari elektro-pop yang mewabah saat ini.
Dalam semangat retro disco RnB, banyak yang mungkin menyamakan Take Back the Night dengan lagu-lagu Michael Jackson di era 80an, akan tetapi karena Jackson memang salah satu panutan Timberlake, hal tersebut tentunya bukan menjadi isu yang signifikan. Bagaimana Timberlake menghadirkan semangat groovy yang soulful dan berkelas, menjadi kelebihan single yang mungkin tidak terlalu ear-worm ini.
Akan tetapi Timberlake dalam Take Back the Night mungkin memang bukan mengejar sesuatu yang terlalu pop-ish, karena disco-funk yang mewarnai dalam lagunya seolah-olah menjadi sebuah tribut akan subgenre tersebut sekaligus menghadirkan aransemen yang cantik dan memikat, alih-alih catchy dan easy listening.
Memang, dibandingkan single-single yang dirilis Timberlake untuk album The 20/20 Experience bagian pertama, secara tone, Take Back the Night memang agak berbeda. Apakah ini menjadi penanda jika The 20/20 Experience bagian kedua akan sedikit berbeda? Kita lihat saja nanti.
