Setelah merilis 'Story of My Life', One Direction akhirnya menemukan cara agar masa tidak hanya memandang mereka sebelah mata. Artinya, produksi yang laku mereka jual tak sebatas yang beraliran dance-pop-rock semacam 'What makes You Beautiful' atau 'Live While We're Young' saja, tapi juga yang lebih "serius". Serius dalam artian tone melemah, volume fun mengecil, dan tema lagu memberat. Orang-orang di belakang 'Story' kembali muncul untuk menguak pesona 1D dalam tatanan musik baru mereka. Adalah power ballad 'You & I', sebuah serenada tentang cinta yang kekal.
Merujuk pada baris lirik spesifik pada "Not even the Gods above//Can separate the two of us//No, nothing can come between//You and I" sejenak mengingatkan pada jargon film "Titanic" -- nothing on earth could come between them. Hanya saja, Julian Bunetta, Jamie Scott, dan John Ryan menaikkan level pengakuan ini hingga ke tingkat Tuhan. Kemustahilan lantas merubungi, sedikit membuat keraguan terhadap ungkapan-ungkapan lain yang sudah dipercaya.
Amazing-nya single ini adalah bagaimana ia menginfeksi pendengar dengan pendekatan drama. Musik bermula sesederhana mungkin, terbangun perlahan dari instrumen gitar hingga full band yang menemani di 1/4 bagian akhir lagu menandakan pergerakan alur dari satu babak ke babak berikutnya. Pembagian vokal yang semakin adil menyamaratakan andil Niall-Liam-Harry-Zayn-Louis. Ini sangat penting, karena tak ada yang boyband bisa lakukan selain bernyanyi di sepanjang lagu. Sangat janggal menemukan semacam koreografi untuk lagu sejenis ini. Alternatif lain adalah membawakannya sambil bermain instrumen, yang mungkin akan terjadi di beberapa album 1D ke depan.
